Need For Speed Celebrates 100,000,000
EA are very happy to announce the Need for Speed series has joined perhaps the most exclusive club in the gaming world as the franchise pushes over the 100M mark, making it the best-selling racing brand in the gaming world. The ultra-exclusive club currently consists of fellow-EA stablemate The Sims, Nintendo's Mario and Pokemon with Tetris completing the set.
When speaking about the achievement Frank Gibeau, president EA Games Label, said: "Few videogame franchises ever reach the 100M units mark, so this is a huge honor. We have millions of fans to thank for driving us to this milestone...With the launch of Need for Speed SHIFT and the upcoming release of Need for Speed NITRO, we hope to continue to deliver the most entertaining, action-packed racing experiences."
Since the release of Need for Speed in 1994, the franchise has…
* Launched 15 blockbuster titles across more than 14 platforms
* Released in 22 languages in over 60 countries
* Players have raced over 279 billion miles of roads & race tracks
* Generated over 17 trillion user-generated vehicle customizations
* Debuted exclusive remix from Snoop Dogg of The Door’s classic song Riders on the Storm
* Sold more games than all new passenger cars sales in the U.S since 1994**
* If Need for Speed boxes were laid out end-to-end, it would span 173,609 football fields
* 100M units represents nearly every household in the United States and is 3x the population of Canada
Some stats about the very first Need for Speed game...
* The entire game fits in 1meg of RAM
* The highest resolution cars have 70 polygons
* 26% of the development team are still at EA

congratulations NFS. We will always be with you :)
i just read about this in the Vancouver sun. it is rather interesting to see that it is only the 5th one of its kind
Too bad that, unlike The Sims, Mario, Pokémon and Tetris, the only thing in common between all the NFS games is that they are racing games... :P
Nice achievement, but coming from a true NFS lover, half the games were crap.
Congratz for EA...Keep up for the good work...thumbs up
very true StanofGB anything after HP2 was done it went downhill
Personally, I wouldn't brag about something as atrociously sacrilegious as that.
^ This man nailed it.
But thanks EA for your continued games with superb quality, no bugs, great re-playability, and in-depth gameplay. Oh wait...
Not bad.
If anything, the few crappy recent titles were good fun. I give you that. Perhaps that's that'd the only reason why this franchise hasn't died out yet.
Good ol' days... ahh.
@Double Mac: I wholeheartedly agree with you.
OMG I had completely forgotten about that song until I read that list.
The miles thing must have been an estimate right? Cause how was it possible for them to record how much people have driven offline?
I can only say I enjoyed the franchise until Hot Pursuit 2, and it sucks that Need For Speed is never going to be the same again. But still, this is quite an achievement.
The fact that 26% of the first NFS team are still at EA was something I didn't know.
@Ricochet: It's pretty obvious that is an estimate, I guess they could have taken the numbers of sold NFS copies and made an average of how much virtual distance each player has driven in the game, and then they did a bit of math.
someone who worked on shift said this as reaction on reaching the 100 million mark: "heh, and now lets reach the 200.000.000 million mark within a year" :D
@ Rick: Talk about wishful thinking!
Congrats tp EA. Too bad we won't see a true NFS anymore :(
They should make a Hot Pursuit 3 to celebrate!
Am I right?
^Damn right you are.
