I've installed the 1.4 patch but my game still crashes. Is there a way to fix this problem?
This patch solves issues with vista, also supports the online play options and stops the game from randomy closing down.

I ran the application to update the game, but it keeps saying "Old file not found. But file with the same name was found. No update has been made." or something like that. What do I do??? I have the Collector's Edition, and it lags sooo much in a race. I really would like to play at full speed.
This patch did nothing for me, I have the special edition as well, and encountered the same problem as DK91 did. Quick google search led me to a SE specific version of the patch which worked for me:
