Its 1000cc but its not like a Ninja ZX10, its torque is toward the low end and mid range, so you have tons of power taking off from a stop. Yet, it can still do 100+ is fine by me, probably only do that on racetrack...cant really outrun the cops here anymore, they upgraded their caprices to chargers lol....

Kawa only sells him one at a time and he says not many people buy them, so I feel special.

1000cc first bike? That's a big bike to start on. I started on a 75cc dirtbike, then 125, then 270, then 500 street, then 600. I'm actually back at 500 because it's a good balance for me as a college student (power/economy). I do plan on getting something bigger once I'd graduated... something 675 or above...

Even with my slow transition, I've wiped out twice due to unfamiliarity and been hit once by someone in a car. Wear your gear man, you're gonna need it!

All that said, good luck and congratulations on the bike!

Thnx.

Oh, I do plan on wearing protective gear, I want to buy a suit similar to what is used in moto gp.
I have ridden a bike before for a couple years, plus im taking a safety course to get lower insurance, be familiar with bike and all.
Since its mostly going to be for intown use, I shouldnt have any problems with wiping out.
Although I have been hit by a car once myself, was on my bicycle, did not feel good. ya, the impact didnt hurt, but the hitting the ground bit did.

Insurance is the best part...

I pay 87 bucks a year through progressive motorcycle insurance. Yep... A year.

I have 0 tickets, 0 at-fault accidents, and have an older 'beater' bike right now... but even when I had a newer, faster, and more expensive bike, it was still only about $178 a year.

Hm... I'll be 21 in march. (we've both still got that stupid under-25 'inexperienced driver' penalty...) I've got my class M throught he Pennsylvania DMV, though I go to school in North Carolina. I've done 2 different state approved safety courses, both which lower my rate. PA is really anal about Motorcycle safety, so maybe it's a difference of states...

That, and if you are trying to cover your bike with collision, etc... bikes rarely make it out of accidents without being totaled...

Like, if I calculate my insurance for your Z1000, I get about $1000 a year to cover the bike (with comprehensive, collision, and accessory coverage). However, w/o comprehensive and collision (just the bare minimum), it's $193.

and just for kicks, I decided to see what it would be for all of the highest coverage and lowest deductables... $5,849 a year. (but it's $30,000 in accessory coverage!!! LOL)

I have health on that too lol... Getting hit hurts, given I dont want to get hit :|
and ya, 30k....I tried that option once, then saw the price...
Also have something in case bike is stolen, and with my luck -_-

Out of curiosity, how much did each safety course lower your insurance? Im about to take one, but im sure I can find another...
and, do you need a M class license? Im told here in alabama that a normal D class license is good enough for cars/bikes. Im...not sure on this...

I think one was 15% (or close to it) and the other just put me in a different bracket of safeness or something... Plus, the motorcycle safety course that is provided by the state of PA provides bikes, helmets, and requires no skills test at the end. (you automatically get your license).

As far as the M class goes... I'm not sure because of the difference between states.

Here's how it works in PA.

To start with, you don't have to have your D class, but it makes things smoother. You apply for an M class permit, which is $10 and you have to pass a written test (That was a lot harder than the D class, lol). Once you have your permit, you can ride wherever you want by yourself while on the permit. The only restrictions on a permit in PA are that you must wear a helmet, you are not supposed to have passengers, and you are not supposed to ride between 11pm and 5am. The permit is good for up to a year, and can be renewed if you don't get your license in that time. Then, once you take the skills test at the DMV, you get an M class 'certification' tagged onto your regular D class. Then you are good to go.

But anyway, it sounds like 'Bama is about the same process...

Motorcycle License - Sixteen year old and older may obtain an unrestricted license to operate a motorcycle. A motorcycle is defined as a motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground but excluding a tractor. The examination for this license is taken from the Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual and the Alabama Driver's Manual. Upon satisfactory completion of the required examination, the applicant will be issued a Class M Alabama driver license. Class M indicates that the holder may operate a motorcycle only. The license is valid for four years.

But um...could use some help picking out a bike suit. I honestly know nothing about them, price doesnt matter, but I need it to be all leather with armor and a spine guard. So far I have found ones with plenty of padding and armor, but no spine guard or slot for one.
Also two piece, dont want a jumpsuit...

04-12-2008, 04:09 AM
Least someone thinks so, this is the first time I have had to buy things like this and I honestly have no idea what is good..
I do know that kevlar protects and both the pants and jacket have it, the boots have kevlar laces(the rest is polymers).
Back brace is a duh, IF I wipe out, I want to be in one piece... Boots have ankle brace to protect ankle and the pants and jacket have armor all over, gloves have carbon fiber knuckle guards...

Meh, goes without saying, I dont plan on EVER crashing, but accidents happen and safety first and all that.

Just a thought on your gear... It's nice stuff, but I would recommend prioritizing some things... ie, your helmet and jacket.

Both are super important, but you've selected a $500+ jacket and a $130 helmet. I would recommend going the other way around.

you can get some pretty bad road rash from an improperly protected torso, but an improperly protected head will leave you sitting in a wheelchair, drooling...

So I would just give monetary priority to the helmet.... that's all. What you have selected should protect you just fine though.

Helmet came in wrong color and had to be re-ordered. Price apparently means nothing according the helmets, they all have the same impact ratings or so I am told by the bike store.
I did change helmets though, the one I was ordering was modular, but it opened with one flick of a button, the one I am getting now is a 2 stage open/close. Every little bit helps.

Plan on turbo charging this....all it took was me hearing a turbo hayabusa to have me glued to it...

True, true. To a certain extent, you can only get so good on impact ratings, etc. Comfort and air circulation usually get better with price...

Turbo? Yikes. That's pretty intense, especially for a first bike. Can't wait to see and/or hear it though.

Gotta get me a new bike soon... Just gotta find the cash for it... :-/

Lookin' at a '91 CBR600 F2 at the moment...

A CBR6 was one of my first choices, but when I looked around and looked at prices...
The CBR6 was 10k aprox and + tax
The z1000 was 8k + tax

400 extra CCs, a unique design that is only sold 1 at a time via Kawa....yaaaa.....choice was obvious.

The new helmet is in the 230 dollar range, by Z1R.

The turbo will pretty much be just for bragging rights and effect. I love the sound of blow off valves lol. This bike will probably never break 80mph, unless a race track opens up around here...

I will be installing street glow neon to the underside to help it be more visible at night.

My bike is more of a 'sport' bike than a crotch rocket >_>
It's kinda in the middle of touring and sport, idk...

Solid black room and ya, that helps loads. Im going with solid blue...multi color is just tacky..

100 bucks for the kit, definitely worth it. Takes only two wires to hook up, so it will be wired to the head lights aaaand since their leds, dont ever have to worry about replacing bulbs like on the older neon.

I can, but I dont because it scares the crap outa me...that bike has 113bhp and 73lbs of torque, it can do a wheelie at 20% throttle :\
Also I need to break the engine in, I cant go over 4k rpms for 500 miles or itll damage the engine.

LOL my bad impressive, pb had been resizing them do to my camera's massive res and apparently that one slipped by, although it should be around a meg then I at least put a thumbnail redirect.

Here it is...the kit...UPS guy woke me from my sleep and I was having a nice dream about driving an F40 around town...if i didnt need this I probably would have killed the guy -_-

http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d77/dewdadew2006/Vehicles/My%20bike/th_IMG_0797.jpg (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d77/dewdadew2006/Vehicles/My%20bike/IMG_0797.jpg)
That's what it looks like in package...this is gonna be loads of fun to install, even moar to wire lolz....

For size reference...
http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d77/dewdadew2006/Vehicles/My%20bike/th_IMG_0798.jpg (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d77/dewdadew2006/Vehicles/My%20bike/IMG_0798.jpg)

When you look at their site... Streetglow (http://www.streetglow.com/site/motorcycle.motorcyclekit.php), you think....it is a lot larger, which made me wonder how I was gonna install something that big on a bike. Then the UPS tracker info said it was 1.1lbs... Im like wtf?
But i'm kinda glad their this small, much easier to work with and mfg are these things bright O_o

Will post again with shot of it getting wired and once it is, apparently my bike shop said they would not install it because of "it might mess something up" "we dun wunna be sued" yadda yadda and I have been told by a cop that is a friend of mine that these are kiiiinda illegal because they are not just accessory lights.
So trip to autozone for on/off switch aaaand back to bed and hope for dreams of F40.

This kit comes with just about everything you could need, adhesive strips, bolts, nuts, wires, distributer and on/off switch(saves trip to autozone yay).
But I talk to my local police tonight and they said it is illegal cause blue LOL, Like that is going to stop me lmfao...on/off switch, I can just turn it off whenever I see a cop car lmfao...

Also says in instructions that I need to drill a hole in my bike....im sure I can find a way around that...

In PA, I think the rule is that you can't have them on when you're moving and on the road... so it might be similar for you. I've had a friend pulled over for red tireflys though... he just said he didn't know that it was a rule, took them off, drove home, and put them back on... hehe.

Also says in instructions that I need to drill a hole in my bike....im sure I can find a way around that...

Maybe try JB Weld. It's an epoxy resin and hardener combo that you use a lot like Bondo. It's sets up in about 2 minutes and has a pretty tight hold. I used it to mend a speaker case in my one car, so it'll definitely hold a few LEDs...

BTW, frame sliders anytime soon?

I will probably get a set of crashbars yes...though atm Im trying to do like 50 things at once, I still dont have my suit, boots, tail or saddle bags and my new laptop got put on the back burner...

Edit: I contacted a detailing shop that does all the work for the local police department and I will be having this..

That's pretty awesome man.

With the 2 remaining sets of lights... is there any way you can get some of the middle/engine are lit? I know there's no outer fairing or anything to attach it to, but is there some way you can get it under the seat or something so that (even if it's dim) the center of the bike is lit just a little bit? That would be pure win.

I was seriously thinking about that, I just need to take a close look at the engine bay and see if there is anywhere it can be mounted without damaging the LED.

Edit: Found two spots to mount the last two pods, wired them and tested, saw no problems as of yet. Will take pics and vid later when it is darker.

Well it isnt so much the driver, it is the fact the lights are blue and thus illegal. I was warned by 3 cops and told the only colors I could use is white, orange or green(and possibly not green) because red/blue are used by emergency vehicles and some people install stuff like this to impersonate police.

I dont know...Ill talk to them some more and see since they are aimed at the ground, will only be used at night, ect.. If I can get an exception, probably not but worth a shot. It does help know some of the police lol.

Windshield and decals came in today, the decals were a pain but easier to put on than the windshield..
The windshield's holes are 1" wider on both sides, so I had to make a new mounting bracket to go on top of the bike's bracket.

Easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission methinks...

I'd be a bummer if you would have to change all the lights out for a different color. Blue looks soo good... even if you can only use it when the bike is parked. I guess Orange or white would look pretty good too, but the blue compliments the orange on the bike so well already... :\

BTW, how much is the mileage now? Did you ran those first 500 miles?

I hate driving tests :(

Don't hype yourself up for it too much... it's not too bad. As long as you're comfortable with a really tight turn or figure 8, it's a cakewalk... just remember to close your visor/faceshield just in case. (I failed my first time around for not putting my visor down... apparently that's a law or something in PA :goofy: )

Oh, btw... I meant to mention something earlier about this... there's a fair amount of controversy about how to break a bike in... a lot of people believe that the sub-4k engine speed is not sufficient to break a bike in and will give you a dead spot in the power band, others say run it hard the whole time, then there's others yet (and I'd be included in that group) that believe that there's a good balance between the two where you're wearing honing marks/hatching in the cyclinder properly, but not ruining your seals or fudging up your oil in the meantime... I'd recommend on doing some research on it.

BTW, how much is the mileage now? Did you ran those first 500 miles?

Im up to 10 miles atm LOL, I have been doing all this work with the odometer at like 7, then I drove around for 3 miles the other day.
Dont worry once I get my license I will be driving it daily, this is what I bought it for lol.

Just have to get used to the clutch, you have to throttle over in 1st gear while accelerating(which implies it takes off fast lol...) but once you're out of first it's fine.
Interesting thing is it seems to skip neutral when shifting up, but not down, odd.

About fastest vehicle...eh heh ya, top speed over over 180mph and 0-60 time that matches a Saleen S7(I LIKE LOL).

The manual for the bike strongly advises against overrevving while breaking it in as it will cause permanent damage to the engine. I would rather keep it at 4k and shift that worry about damaging my cylinders. It isnt so bad anyways, this is an intown bike mainly and with a 4k rev limiter i have to shift fairly often while accelerating to 45mph so it will save gas.
If I had a bought a Ninja...they had very high rev limits and a 1kcc Ninja's first gear goes all the way to 115mph :\

Also they administer a written test here for motorcycles, as it is hard to give a driven test for one.

Had an accident the other day riding it, lost hold of the clutch while throttling up, popped it and went out of cotrol and off the road.
My new Givi windshield was the only damage I suffered thankfully, but the mount I made is damaged beyond repair, the screws were physically sheared off and the windshield is cracked where the screws go through.
Also have knocked the right exhaust pipe loose, but that is an easy fix so I am not worried about it.
Now... My only option is to either drill new holes into the acrylic windshield to fit the OEM mount, or by a new windscreen for 118 dollars. I did however find a company based in England that sells them for my make/model and year.
http://www.powerbronze.co.uk/Display_Screen.asp?SSN_LNG=ENG&SSN_CUR=UK%20%A3&PRG_ID=33723#MODEL?SSN_LNG=ENG&SSN_CUR=UK%20%A3

http://www.powerbronze.co.uk/images_temp/807856D4-AE83-464A-AC6F-5A694368A16DFFFFFF-315-0.JPEG
This is not the exact image, I have emailed them to see if they have an exact picture of it. Since this is made for my model and year...I am seriously thinking of buying it and seeing if I can return or sell my current one.

Also, I pulled several muscles in my left leg while trying to not kill myself, I saved the bike and myself, but I am having trouble walking and standing. I will not be riding it anytime soon.
Plus I still have to have the damn "M" added to my license before I can technically ride my bike legally, I have insurance, the license plate and a "D" class license, but that isnt enough apparently.

Right now I'm pissed that I damaged my bike, but at least it didnt take too much damage and still runs.

Noticed this...

Carbon Fiber side panels, absolutely getting these, this is a major improvement over the black matte plastic ones. Should free up a few lbs too.

Had an accident the other day riding it, lost hold of the clutch while throttling up, popped it and went out of cotrol and off the road.

:\ sorry to hear that. At least the damage wasn't too bad... and I guess you have your manditory first crash out of the way. :P My first crash/dump was a sub-5mph turn at a stopsign... wasn't much, but it's suprising how the strain of 'saving' (I didn't) the bike left me with a gimpy leg and shoulder for about a week. Hope everything heals up alright.

Nice. Maybe ebay the old ones to cover some of the cost?

Frankly, at the moment having more than one vehicle in college is too much. When you add gas, insurance and maintenance, it's just too much money.
Plus I could use the money to finish repairs on the Z.

Pretty sure that's why.

Also, I don't see a reason in bumping a thread just to request a lock, it was 2 months old, but whatever.
