My uncle had one of those body-style Passats; a 1994 model IIRC. It looked quite nice, especially when clean - black with the BBS wheel option.

Although, I have a feeling they will be worth more than the car itself :P

You should also consider painting the cheap body-cladding to match the body colour, but that's just my two cents.

You know I cannot resist giving my input on modding a VW... here's a quick photoshop of a 92 passat to give you an idea of what to do with it. Basically the easy part is to get the lower front and rear valences and sides painted black (nice contrast with white) The more expensive part would be getting coils and some blacked out BBS style rims. Then do some engine mods later, mostly because ppl won't expect Passats to be quick anyways so making it look tasteful would be the main theme.

This ABT B3 Passat grille is pretty nice.
http://www.vwot.org/community/modules/Gallery/albums/album634/101_1197.sized.jpg

Borbet styled rims like this looks really nice on most eurocars from late 80's to early 90's

When you got serious about pimping it out, contact me for a Photoshopped picture before you go for it. The picture above posted by KV12SC is the kinda look I'd go for, along with a nice and subtle sporty exhaust. Something like:

Then sell your junk, get a B4, grille problem solved. :)

The B4 VR6 "Exklusiv" looks really cool and doesn't need much visual modding, though I don't think you'll find one of those... They're rare even where I live.

Rants aside, have you tried eBay or something for the grille? It would REALLY improve the look of the car. God knows what VW were thinking with that B3 hood...

When I drive around in that so called sports car girls look at me as if my balls are showing...just to give you a better image of how they look at me; my balls are very, very, incredibly hairy.

Congrats on your new vehicle, man.
I'm pretty sure I'd go for a B4 or even early B5, but hey, this is your first car man!

Don't listen to those people who expect your first car to be a DUBster with Lowenhart chrome 21" wheels.

Dunno if you've fixed it yet, but if the speedo cable is the same as the corrado's, here is a new replacement for the speedo cable, not cheap but it might be all you get.
http://www.bahnbrenner.com/vw_audi/products/2001/HD_Corrado_Speedometer_Cable

It may or may not be the same, since we have the same cluster that end more than likely is but the tranny end may not be the same. I'd ask around before dropping the cash.

It would suit your interior and have similar surface area to your current wheel creating an awesome cultstyle Porsche-pedigree flavour to your interior.

With that, lookee here:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a268/CasteSystems/Picture070-1.jpg

Now THAT's Dubocracy. If you put this on, do some mods later on, then your car would be matched to European cultstyle tuners classiness-wise. Yano what I'm sayin'? Then make her sit lower and get that grille. Dayumn that's smokin hot.
There's tons of replicas of these around too.

Black would look like shit IMO. Might as well just remove the hubcaps and paint the steel rims black. Graffiti would be better.

These were the exact same hubcaps that came on the B4 so maybe you could get the B4 VR6 rims, they look nice. I think any kind of VW or Audi 5-shooter would look nice as well.

tristan man, this guy is modding on a budget, and infact most of us would struggle to get porsche parts to fit a B3
i'd say getting a good look is possible with little work on a VW
all you need to do is slam it and find some decent wheels, infact steelies would look really good on it, proper steelies though,
is it legal to band wheels in the us?
(aka cut them and make them wider to make a normal wheel deep dish?)

Then what color would you reccomend out of those pick of colors?

Just leave those hubcaps alone! Painting them any colour would look like cheap rice work. It's much better to replace them with proper rims. What's more, the Passat originally came with 14" wheels so a 15" or 16" rim would already be a huge improvement and well within his budget.

There's not a lot of stuff that looks good on that car anyway. I'm partial to the Borbet A and the Schmidt TH-Line, though I don't know if it's too expensive for him. Other good suggestions are old-school Königs and BBSs but I'm afraid he can't cope with the price either. If that's the case I'd just go for OEM rims myself. Even then I have no idea if it's easy to find good OEM rims from old Volkswagens in his area.

Keeping it original is also a good idea because those hubcaps don't look too bad and the car looks like it's in mint condition. I acknowledge Tubaman takes good care of this car, which is always nice to see. :) So I won't allow him to do something cheap like painting the hubcaps.

My gripe with him is that he could've gone for a Passat B4 which is way more tasteful and generally better since it's the improved model of the B3. It should cost about the same, too. I'll refrain from criticising him if it bothers people so much but that's my opinion.

I agree with that statement(s) but think about it, if it is a good high quality job than it wouldn't look as bad as it is now. And I also agree with taking the hub caps off.

Hmm, if i recall in his first post, he says its his first car, I'm not sure if this is the way it "go's" for other people but i'm pretty sure you really don't have much of a choice for a first car. See my first car will probably be a 1991 Honda Accord inherited from my sister. In my case I love that car and theres thousands of modding possilblities for it, which there is for B3 as OZ mentioned.
In Tubaman's case it probably went down like this. his parents offered him to buy the car, he agreed. I'm pretty sure he wasn't like, NOOO I DON'T WANT THIS KIND OF PASSAT, GET ME A BETTER CAR.
He wanted mobility, he got mobility
To sum this up he didn't have much of a choice!

Before you put wheels on (currently they look nice and smooth, and dont even think about huge steelies that look like a bent kitchen table or some weird collar), I'd put in some nice used seats from crashed newer VWs, Audis or even sicker - Porsches.

...And, if you have some salad, get like a job covering the dash in this sort of rally material (which apparently isnt that expensive) all in black. And a 944 steering wheel. And porsche rims, chromed.

That'd be fuuuuuuuuu*ing wicked, as are your taillamps.

I am a big fan of your taillights. They have a sort of a Corrado air to them now, or even 90s BMW style with the L-shape. MAN are they hottt.

What I would do now is white out the front indicators somehow - or even hotter - stick on some 993 911/Audi S2/RS2 indicators on the bumper. Boy would that be cultstyle euro.

I'd be tempted to buy replica 90s Audi/Porsche wheelz.

it's do able, but it takes a lot of careful work, and once you chop there is no going back, i fyou make a mistake you have to buy a new bumper, which for older cars like this, it can be expensive, or just plain hard to find the parts.

i would find another bumper FIRST, then start modifying one of them, so if you mess up you have a spare. also means you dont have to take it off the vehicle and you can take more time to do it.

I don't like Porsche rims on VWs. Particularly the Cups. They don't fit the square-ish look of the mid-90 Veedubs IMO.

I think Audi rims would look much better. The cars are more closely related. My Veedub (it's lost in this forum somewhere) has Audi rims for example and it looks good.

These are my rims, though mine are a bit different:

http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/256034-Audi%20Nuvolari%20Design%20Style%20Alloy%20Wheels. JPG

Of course, don't go shopping for Nuvolaris because they're quite expensive.

If you want something different for your Veedub, look no further than Audi. :) I know Tristan is eager to Porscheify your Passat but Audi is a safer bet. :P

If you really want Porsche rims try looking at 944 and other cars which are closer to VWs.

Chromed 944 and 928 rims are often used for VWs cultstyle. I love intechanging items of VAG/Porsche brands. You're right, I think the wheels should show less brake, like steelies.

Audi wheels and their replicas (the latter being the cause of my boredom and consequent dislike for last gen Audi A8 wheels, the legendary ones) are nearly a cliché and if chosen badly, can **** the car up pretty badly. If chosen well, the effect is really good. Zpectre is in the end right, Audi wheels is a safer bet, but they need to be relatively small and not looking too new or they'll spoil the cultstyle look.

And I love Porscheifying V-dubs. I found Mercedes wheels on them an abomination, they did start to grow on me a little but BMW rims on VW would be atrocious.

But these are just base version Euro Golf mk4 default steelies. Nothin' special 'bout 'em. HOWever, you should try just buying steel rims of a base Golf mk4, in silver I think they could look immense on your ride. Black could look good but might need serious lowering to achieve an effect - and they would need to be nice and shiny to show that you're not just missing hubcaps.

yeah, sorry for the thread-jacking tuba.
i had a thought about your choice in wheels, you should look for some banded ones see if there anre any for a decent price, just to add that small amount of custom.

Nice picture. Although, what's going on with the small lower panel, next to the rear wheel? Can you paint that with a cheap spray can?

Seen some beautiful Golf IVs... Oh God, someone had a black Golf GTI, US rear lights, angel fronts, a Sharan rear badge (smaller and tidy), black Porsche Cup wheels which looked like 993 GT2 with gold bolts... (used H&R wheel adaptors)

big-muppet's signature Bora looks beautiful too.

Hey Tuba, aside from the spark plugs, what have you done with the engine? Simple tune-ups like cleaning the air filter or changing the oil can be fun if you have the right tools and time.

yea thats about it, sparks, oil, air-fliter...just the simple stuff, but sometime its going to need a complete rebuild, which i'm kinda looking forward to :o

that guy will be running bags, but for show vehicles i think its okay. I wouldn't have it myself, I prefer coil-overs.

if i wanted performance i would not put big heavy bags on my car.... rofl
coilovers ftw

Sir Tristan
04-28-2010, 02:36 PM
...annnnnddd thats about it. :D

What exactly is wrong with it? ****s up the performance?

Dr.DooM
04-28-2010, 02:58 PM
For air ride to work you need to install a compressor, this adds wieght, the bags themselves impair the performance of the suspension and add weight.
it adds a LOT of weight.

Kracka
04-28-2010, 02:59 PM
Not really the weight issue, but the fact that the bags will not be stiff regardless of the air pressure, and you'll have more body roll when bags than you had when you were on stock suspension.

Coilovers or Cupkits = Very nice how much /borat

Dr.DooM
04-28-2010, 03:12 PM
You'd be surprised how heavy them things are! also the compressor unit takes up space, most people fit them into the boot, i'd be tempted to fit it externally , not sure where though.

Gorgeous stereo. Hate it when they're silver and disrupt the whole dash. Yours looks almost OEM.
