Finally! My dad sold me his 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis.
Engine: 4.6L V8
Mileage: 96,xxx miles
HP: 200 @4250 rpm
Torque: 275@ 3000rpm

I have no plans for the car as of now, there are just a couple things I want to do to give it my own personal touch, but besides that there will be no major improvements/customization done to this car.

Oh hey, I remeber the the riced out 'Rolla.

Nice job on the Mercury! At least your dad sold you his old car. I'm permenatly borrowing the pickup for the rest of my life from him.

Personal touches, you say? As in...?

car looks like it is in great shape. Great pick up from your dad.

Thanks guys.
As for personal touches, idk really haha. I just dont want it to seem like an old man is driving behind the wheel.

I am putting a cd player and speakers in it very soon, probably as soon as this semester is over. Also I plan on buying some rain/wind vents for the windows. Besides that, probably a URI sticker, haha.

If you think you look old driving behind that, come drive my car. I like it, and I like the color alot.

The car looks perfect as it is! Especially the color.

What do you think about the transmission, BTW? Do you prefer driving a stick shift like your old Toyota?

Thanks again guys. At first I wasnt sure if I was going to like the color, but it has definitely grown on me.

@killua
both this car and my toyota were automatic. I have really no experience driving a stick.

The most sluggish and most bulletproof tank from Ford.

That said with the amount of mods for Ford's 4.6 V8 out there the 'slow' part seems like a rather temporary thing.

Congrats on the new ride, looks sick.

Primus
12-11-2009, 06:54 PM
Nice ride!

Not as sluggish as you think, GTR. It's got decent power untill 120KM/h or so. After that it's Honda Civic style.

Some tips for you, fd2black: keep and eye on the front fenders, as the metal is thin and is bound to rust some day. I hope you have the digital dash; it's ****ing pimp...

Been thinking a lot the past few days about trying to get some more power out of the car, but without spending a lot of money. Anybody got any ideas? I was thinking maybe intake, maybe exhaust, but I'm kinda new to this stuff so any input is appreciated.

Primus
01-07-2010, 09:39 PM
You got the dual setup or the single pipe setup?

Intake, dualies with slash-cut tips, some Marauder rims and you're ballin'.

AgentRoo
01-08-2010, 03:16 AM
If you seriously want more power, then it has to be forced induction + exhaust + remap.

It's debatable if an intake will give any noticable power increase, same goes for upping the exhaust.

Note that if you do change the exhaust without any other mods, don't go more than about 0.5" bigger - you'll lose power.

Bl0cks
01-08-2010, 02:26 PM
I know you may not want to do this since it does have a nice interior, but you could make the car lighter. Could be as simple as keeping the interior and trunk to the bare essentials: spare tire, jack, etc. The more extreme would be removing the AC, radio, and getting a fiberglass hood and trunk lid.

AgentRoo
01-09-2010, 04:55 AM
True. IIRC, for every 10kg removed the improvement is the equivalent of a 2hp gain. Plus, basic reduction has the advantage of being free (and improving economy :D)

fd2black
01-15-2010, 04:16 PM
Hmm, I didn't know that about removing weight. Very interesting.

@Primus

That is probably the way I am going to go with this car. I found a set of Marauder rims and tires locally for $400 but I really don't have any excess money to put towards the car at the moment.

As for the exhaust, I currently have a single pipe set up but I definitely would like to go over to dual. There is a couple local exhausts shops in town and I'm gonna try and get a good deal from them.
Also I've been debating about getting Flowmaster Supper 44's or Magnaflows. I really dont know which one I would rather get. I tried looking for some dyno results to see the different but I could not find any.

And last but not least. I will probably be purchasing the AFE cold air intake, seeing how its the only one I could find that was specifically for the Grand Marquis. I could go with the K&N Crown Vic one, but not sure if it would still fit the same way.

Primus
01-15-2010, 04:25 PM
lol it would fit the exact same way. The cars are both identical. I'd say Flowmasters. MagnaFlows are cool but their tone vanishes at higher RPM - at least it did on my Achieva.

As for power? Considering the stock dual exhaust has a 15hp increase over the stock single, it's safe to say you could get around 20hp from a performance one. Replace the headers and you could be looking at around 25+. It's guuuuuuuuuuud.

fd2black
01-15-2010, 05:02 PM
That's what I thought about the K&N. Also, the K&N website claims a 16.85 HP gain from just adding the CAI. Seems pretty decent to me. Especially If I can manage to get an extra 20+ out of an exhaust system.

My main goal is to get the torque over 300 ft lb and get the horsepower up around 250.

I like the car, but rear end looks hideous with half of it red.

Are there mods for this car the removes that red bar?

fd2black
02-07-2010, 09:38 AM
I agree Meastro. I have looked but couldnt really find much. I know that the Mercury Marauder has tail lights like a crown vic, without the red bars in the middle. If anybody can find those pieces the Marauder has let me know haha.

And hondaman, intake will come in the summer. Cant wait!

Alright, instead of starting a new thread I thought that I would just ask it here. I am looking into purchasing HIDs and I want to buy from a well known and reliable company. I have been looking on the net for the past week or so but I'm not sure what companies to trust and all that.

Basically I'm looking for a 4000-6000K plug and play HID kit for 9007. Whatever help you can give will be appreciated.

Also, been taking a look at flowtech mufflers lately, maybe doing that in the summer? who knows

Well washed my car today, but not happy with the way it came out cuz i was being rushed, so no pictures. Probably re-wash tomorrow and post pics. But I did get around to washing my engine and stuff. So here are before and after shots of the engine.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b33/gluiz90/197.jpg

but now there is a slight vibration so I'm not sure if i got something wet that I wasnt supposed to or if something else happened. I dont know. If it continues after a couple days im gonna get it checked out.

Besides that car hasnt really changed much. I've starting working my full time hours for the summer so some slight mods will be in the near future. Nothing too crazy tho.

My ideas:

Some minor redoing (interior, etc. to keep it nice)
Engine conversion: a Mustang GT V8 with a supercharger and a new gearbox will do it
New suspension stuff
New rims

And you've got a sleeper.

You should do the black grille, it looks great.

Primus
12-05-2010, 01:11 PM
If you do decide to paint your grille black, I suggest painting the outer trim black, too; it'll give it that nice Marauder look. Some Marauder wheels would look dirty, as well.

Does your alternator make a slight whining noise, by any chance?

Yeah I was thinking that. or I may paint the trim body color, I think that looks pretty good on these cars as well. And with that, Marauder rims would look sick, tinted windows, and the car would be perfect in my eyes.

As for the alternator making a whining noise. Im not sure. There has been a whining noise coming from the front end after it rains and I assumed it was my serpentine belt. Why do you ask?

If you have a problem with it, PM an admin, which I have done, don't just keep posting on in this topic.

Anyways, to talk about the car a little bit. No big updates really, one I get my refund from school I'll be purchasing some 4300k hids, a Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt, and probably a new belt tensioner and idler pulley.

Hopefully when summer comes around I'll have the money to finally convert the car to a dual exhaust setup, and possibly some window tint. We'll see.

So I raced a buddy of mine tonight in his 2006 Impala.... and lost. so I decided tonight, its about time to start doing something about that. So once the summer comes around and I save up a bit of money, I will be converting to duals and possibly replacing the intake.
I'll probably go with an h-pipe with dual Dynomax SS ultra flows, which run for about 75 bucks a piece. They're quiet at idle and cruising, and when you get on the throttle they are nice and loud, which is exactly what I want. Hopefully I can see a bit of improvement with these upgrades.

Also, I replaced all my interior lights with LED's, looks amazing, will get pics ASAP.

Go to a scrap yard and pull a rear axle out of a 98-04 GT Mustang. Those ratios will really wake up your cars seat of the pants acceleration.

fd2black
04-11-2011, 10:36 PM
There's a much easier gear ratio change than getting a rear axle off a mustang. Ford sells gear sets that would swap out the ones I have now. I believe my car has 3.27's and if I was looking to upgrade I could go with a set of 3.73's like this...
http://adtr.net/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=27

only problem is that I wouldn't want to decrease my gas mileage, which sadly these would do.

So as for the rims, my friend contacted me today and said he still wants to sell. I just need to find a good deal on spacers now, because they are going to cost me more than the rims if I buy them brand new. FML!

On a different note, about a week ago I purchased some LED strip lighting off ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170649945955&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

They are going in my trunk. My trunk light is just horrible and this is a popular mod with this car. I am going to hardwire them into the lighting that is currently there. It is going to make a huge difference. Hopefully when I get back from vaca they will be at the house.

Anyways, I've had the interior and license plate LED's in for about 6 months now, just never got around to taking pictures. MUCH better than the standard halogens and I highly recommend them to everyone. I installed the trunk ones about a week ago. Its a 24 inch strip of 5050 LED's. Super bright! So I need to replace my tensioner pulley and idler pulley. The tensioner is the one that is loud, so I figured I would do them both at once. I haven't had the time to do the work myself, so I called the local ford quicklane whatever today and they quote me $190 for labor!

So I'm going to make some calls to try and find it cheaper, but there's a 95% chance that I'm just going to have to find the time to do it myself. I mean, from what I've read on CVN it shouldn't take more than an hour to do.

Pulleys have been replaced. Did them myself in about a half hour. Car is smooth and quiet again. Love it...

Here are some pictures I took today.

HID kit looks good in there, how is it holding up? Did you have problems mounting your ballasts using the sleeves they gave you? My friend and I had to rig them up so they would onto the ballasts.

thanks man. the kit is holding up great I love em! As for the mounting, I didn't buy the extra mounts, but there was a slot in the front of my engine bay that the ballasts fit into perfectly so I just zip-tied them to it, put the radiator mount back on, and the ballasts are completely hidden.

so yeaaaaaaaa the HIDs have to go. I just can't see a damn thing at night!
Yes the color looks great and all, but the light doesn't throw as far as my halogens did. The loss of high-beams probably didn't help either. Probably should have listened to all the guys over at CVN who tell everyone to stay away from HID's unless you do a projector kit. DoH!

So yup, HID's will be coming out this weekend and the halogens will be going back in.

That sucks bro, mine work just fine without projectors (even though I plan on doing a retrofit). I guess it just depends on how the housings work.

Well. This is a sad day for the Merc. One of the pistons got hydro-locked from my cracked intake manifold.
Resulting in a bent rod. SO at this point I either have to find a used engine, or part-out the car. Sad day :(

Well, decent news everyone. I found a good deal on an engine with only 80k miles on it. So the shop is putting it in and I should have the car back by the end of next week.

Andrew, we'll have to get that shot soon! I'm moving back to south Kingston tomorrow on 108. We'll have to do one ASAP.
