View Full Version : "No name yet" - 2009 Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition

Honestly, I knew this was coming for a long time...almost a year now...that I was probably going to be owning this car sooner or later. About 5 years ago, my dad suffered a severe stroke. He's been in and out of hospitals since then but he's remained confident that sooner or later he'd stop having seizures and be able to drive permanently again. Every time he has one, the doctors won't allow him to drive for six months. About a year ago, he bought this car hoping that he'd be able to drive it, and he really hasn't. My parents really saw no need in having two cars when he can't drive and basically said if I took over the payments, the car was mine. I accepted.

So here are the scrummy details:

2009 Buick Lucerne CXL Special Edition

From what I've seen, the Special Edition package gets it a nifty appearance package with extra chrome and some ground effects. Don't see very many of them, either.

Has about 7k on it currently. Garage kept, only driven on a few trips and rarely ever else.

3.9L V6 with 227 hp and 237 lb-ft of torque...although that's on the new ratings which are a bunch of bs in my opinion...on the old ratings the same engine developed 240 hp and 240 tq in 07.

Rest of it is pretty much standard stuff. 17" chrome wheels, Heated front seats and steering wheel, power everything, leather, cool little computerized driver interface, XM radio w/CD changer and uplevel sound system, autodim mirrors, automatic headlights/wipers, backup sensors, dual climate zone, etc. OnStar turn by turn navigation is pretty neat too.

It also has a built in voice activated phone that you can tap into through the steering wheel but I haven't completely figured it out yet. I've had people call me but I always end up hanging up on them unintentionally. Kind of weird that my car has it's own phone number.

There's probably more stuff that I'm not aware of yet but I'll have to learn it as I go along.

Current value...blue book says it's about 27k but I owe about 18k on it still. Finishing off their payment plan will have me done in 5 years. They locked in a low APR too so I'm pretty happy about that.

I have no plans for this. It's under warranty for a long time so everything is staying stock.

Thanks guys. My dad is actually doing okay, he's able to walk and talk pretty well, although it is pretty hard for him to get around. He can physically drive, pretty well too, although sometimes I don't know how. Unfortunately, he keeps having random seizures every few months that keeps him from being able to drive. It's pretty hard on him cause he's a car guy, he used to race vintage Porsches and BMWs in the days when they weren't vintage.

I went hunting for pics of him and me or just him with the car but I can't seem to find any. I think they might have been stored on my camera when it got run over. I did find a few more craptastic cell phone pics to share with you, though.

Haven't updated much, but well that's because nothing much has really changed. 11,600 miles now.

But here's some new pics and an acceleration video.

And an acceleration video:

yQ8-NUpkWSA

Fast? Nah, but it moves itself well enough. I discovered recently that the 230 hp 3.9 V6 in the Special Edition is unique to it, as a step up from the 197 hp 3.8 but not quite to the levels of the V8, obviously. It has a good amount of low to midrange power which takes it off from stoplights with authority without being strained. Power wanes off up top but it still has good passing power.

Seems like a good car, better than Chevy offerings which is the whole point of it. Buick designs are pleasant to the eye. The interior could be more flashy, though.

Very nice car, I've seen maybe 3 Buicks in my life (then again, I'm European). However, I just can't stop thinking of a VW Phaeton, mainly the rear and the steeringwheel are quite similar.

When does the warranty expire? After 100.000 miles?

Yeah, five years or 100,000 miles. It's very likely that I'll have traded in on a new car by then, so I doubt I'll be doing anything to this one.

How much did your dad pay for it?

I'm not sure exactly, I never really asked. 2010 Lucerne CXL-SE's similarly equipped are around 34-35k MSRP, but my dad could have gotten some rebates or incentives that I am unaware of.

hondaman

You got your eye on a different car then?

Yeah I think so. My mom and Dad are left with a Honda Accord (lol) and they had wanted all along to sell that to me instead so that the Buick would be their only car, but they knew I would have none of it lol...

They decided instead to stop payments on the Buick since the Accord was paid off, and let me assume them, but they really miss it. I mentioned something about maybe getting a new Buick Regal or LaCrosse when I graduate, and they said if I do that they might buy it back from me, with whatever they end up getting from selling the Accord. Probably still would have a few payments left but in the end it works out pretty well, the money I get from that I can use to put a decent downpayment on whatever I end up buying.

I love the Lucerne, but I am really excited about the new offerings from Buick. They want me to have a dependable car for college (which the truck is, but it's 14 years old you know) so this works out well for everyone. I've only got a year and a half or so to go so they won't be stuck with the Accord for too long.
That is really good value considering you got leather in there! How's the trim quality? And is this wood feh reals?
Trim quality is fantastic. Everything is smooth and solid feeling, no rattles (which I wouldn't expect at 11k), very tight panel gaps, and everything works seamlessly and quietly. It's probably the best built car I've ever driven.

But more than likely I doubt the wood is real. It's very convincing though.

The interior has a really nice design to it, with the little 2-tone thing going on the dash and seats (slightly different shade of grey).

Outside it also looks good.

Sounds good value too, I mean - the quality, the big engine, the pretty looks.

Well the Lucerne just had it's first unscheduled maintenance. In two years (car was bought in Dec 08 ) of ownership, the car needed only one thing...a bolt tightened.

Literally, a loose ground bolt was causing some minor system issues. Didn't really affect anything at all but the car told me to check traction and brake control systems.

It's a testament to GM's excellent build quality. Warranty covered the 'repair'.

He's completely fine, not a bruise or a scratch anywhere. Driver's side airbag failed to deploy, kinda scary to think about what might have happened had this been greater than a ~35 mph impact as it was here.

These pics were taken from my android phone, so sorry if they kinda suck...

We have since gotten word that the car is gonna be declared totalled, no surprise there.

Now as for why this is here...

My mom and dad are eventually gonna end up buying a 2011 Buick Enclave CXL within the next month but for now they are car-less, so the Lucerne isn't mine for the time being. I'm okay with it, at least for this month I don't have to make a car payment.

2011 CXL-2, fully loaded.

Anyway so that got resolved a long time ago. Here's the Lucerne getting it's first ever tank of E85 (it's flex fuel capable!). We just got an E85 pump in our area, it's 30 cents a gallon cheaper than regular fuel. I was getting jealous looks the whole time from people who can't use it.

Update here.

I haven't really been in possession of this car for a while. As college went on I found it harder and harder to make the payments and my mom and dad ended up bailing me out and the car is theirs again.

But, I'm due to graduate in a few months, and I'm left with a 17 year old truck (which I love to death, but still). So the good news is, they are helping me buy a new used car outright! No more car payments. It looks like a 2010 or 2011 Chevrolet Impala LT will be in my driveway in 3-4 months, or less. Stoked.

Thanks guys, and yeah it's FWD. But they're pretty badass for a FWD car though. 0-60 in 6 seconds flat according to Car and Driver. 3.6 liter V6 mated to a fairly close ratio 6 speed automatic.

Check it:

QRVa5uvc4uA

They handle well for a FWD car too...

Back on the subject of the Lucerne, here's an update from last night even though it's not technically mine anymore.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/the94hondaman/DSCF4198.jpg

Ouch!

My mom hit the crap out of a Toyota with it. Don't worry, she's 100% fine, the impact wasn't even hard enough for the airbags to deploy, but as you can see it's pretty well cosmetically ****ed. But there's no permanent harm done, it can be fixed.

I have to say I'm somewhat glad this car has passed from my hands after this. You may remember my dad's accident earlier in this thread. They are a bit hard on cars.

Which is one reason I'm really looking forward to my new Malibu...it'll be new enough that I can baby the absolute crap out of it and keep it blindingly shiny. That's coming soon. Two months at the latest but I think recent events might land a 3.6 Malibu in the driveway sooner than that.

Update on this!

That 08 Malibu LTZ (the black one) pictured above sold like the day after I test drove it.

Local dealer has a gorgeous 09 white LTZ with 40K for a clearance price of 16.5k. Don't know if I'll be able to jump on it, but I want to!

Regardless, after last night's research I know I'll be getting an LTZ. Don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I searched for eligible LTZ's in a 100 mile radius and found 5 with less than 60k miles with the 3.6 selling for less than 17k (my main criteria). I love the LTZ's...very classy looking. So when the time comes I'll definitely be getting one of those...

Here's the white LTZ, I want to jump on this one so bad lol...

http://www.glynnsmithchevy.com/VehicleDetails/used-2009-Chevrolet-Malibu-LTZ-Opelika-AL/1374517813

It's gawjus. But they all are. Most of the LTZ's I'm finding are black with the black/red interior like the one on the first page.

Looks like a 2008 or 2009 Malibu LTZ is in my immediate future.

As for the Lucerne, it's in the bodyshop and will probably be done within the next few days.

hondaman
02-06-2012, 12:50 PM
I agree, the interior is one of my favorite parts!

I actually just returned from my preferred local dealership having placed a custom order for the exact Malibu I want. I figured if I'm going to have to wait anyway, I might as well get exactly what I want, right?

So in the end, I may not know the exact car I'm getting, but I know what it will look like. Like this:

http://blog.used-cars-fl.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2008-malibu.jpg

I think the Malibu LTZ looks best in black, plus I've always wanted a black car. They don't stay clean but they do shine up really nice.

The only thing that's uncertain is the interior color. It'll be either black/brick or cocoa/cashmere. I don't have a huge preference one way or the other. The cocoa/cashmere has wood trim while the black/brick has brushed aluminum.

If your up to cleaning it, I would reccomend the Black LTZ, because it looks absolutley STUNNING!
The white LTZ would be 2nd after the black one ;), so you've got quite the decision to make.
Maybe even a silver one? sort of a homage to "Grandma's Revenge?"

The funds are secured! Serious Bu shopping is starting tomorrow. I'll be working daily with the dealer scouring the auction site to find the right one. I expect I'll have my Bu within a week. Super excited.

Thanks, I agree!

My Malibu is on it's way here!

I don't have pictures of my exact ride as I don't have access to the auction site, but here are the details:

It is a 2008 Malibu LTZ V6 in Silverstone Metallic with an Ebony/Brick interior. Looks like I'm back in a silver car!

It's in flawless condition inside and out, and there's a bonus! The windows are already tinted, so it saves me the trouble of doing it myself. That appears to be the only modification to the car.

As I said I don't have pics of mine yet but will in a couple of days. Here's a similar one:

And the interior on a silver car:

Looking forward to getting it, and then I can take some pics of my own! Once that happens, I'll leave this thread and start one for the Malibu...

The black one looked better IMHO. Still, your new ride is pretty awesome, especially in what concerns the interior.

Thanks guys!

Honestly, you have to see it in person. The silver with ebony/brick interior works MUCH better than the black with same.

As well, I do have a history with silver cars...

Forgot to mention, I pick it up Friday morning!
