View Full Version : 1991 VW GTI......with a twist.
Kracka 04-01-2010, 03:56 PM Well, I recently bought a 1989 Jetta GLI Helios Edition(1 of 1500) needed a few things fixed so I did them. I decided to put it up for sale as the idle was a little funky and needed some body work done.
The first person to contact me was the owner of this beast:
Here are some details I'll type up for you guys:
91 GTI
Indigo Blue from a MK4 Golf
MK4 2.0 wheels painted black
H&R Springs with Bilstein shocks/struts
Neuspeed front and rear sway bars
Thermal catback
Smoked crosshair H4 Ecode headlights
Euro front bumper

It is fast as shit and fun as hell to drive.
HOLY SHI...
>_>
Sooo... were do you live... exactly >_>
DodgeBoy 04-01-2010, 05:04 PM It's got potential. VR6 Golf must move pretty good. Give it a nice paint job and it will be a sweet car.
3ni_2nr 04-01-2010, 06:23 PM **** YEA!
That's art right there.

This def moves...I mean it's not as fast as the GTO, but a 2100lb car with a 2.8l 6 cylinder is fun.
Motor and gauge cluster are out of a 95 Jetta, the trans is out of a 98
Motor has 20k miles on it, trans has 70k
Zpectre 04-01-2010, 09:11 PM I was going to kill you for buying what looked like a fugly beater but upon seeing the last photo I had an orgasm.
lolwut, that engine doesnt go there! HAX
Bl0cks 04-02-2010, 02:21 AM I like it. Does it have NOS?
Dr.DooM 04-02-2010, 02:51 AM this car is awesome! i hope its not some kind of april fools cos its one awesome car.
3ni_2nr 04-02-2010, 03:16 PM Love how the dipstick barely makes in there. :P
EDIT:
:idea2:
Post a vid of it screaming for us pliz.
Dr.DooM 04-03-2010, 10:30 AM ahhh man, imagine if you got yourself some forged pistons, a front mount intercooler and a twin turbo set up.
Kracka 04-03-2010, 11:35 PM I will try to get a video, but don't hold me to it.
Eventual plans are for a turbo kit, but I may do some Schrick cams first. 268s with a GIAC chip? IDk...shouldbe a 13.4 @ 104 mph car in the 1/4 mile.
Tubaman 04-05-2010, 02:47 PM Awesome! Vr6 MK2 FTW!!!!
Kracka 04-08-2010, 12:16 AM Well..after tonight a few plans have to get kicked into gear.
Forged Bottom end + GT35R ;)
Dr.DooM 04-08-2010, 02:29 PM :D nice stuff can't wait!
Sir Tristan 04-19-2010, 12:20 PM ahhh man, imagine if you got yourself some forged pistons, a front mount intercooler and a twin turbo set up.
...Resulting in like some 500 mo-fo'in PferdenStark, eh? (And torque-steering like a *****)
Tubaman 04-19-2010, 12:28 PM haha whats up with the hose...

Max Prez 04-20-2010, 12:12 AM I love the VR6. That thing can take forced induction to 400 horses without needing engine modifications. Imagine that with the MKII's light body.
*hint hint*

Previous Owner had the PCV system dumped to the ground/atmosphere, and I failed inspection from the oil vapors, so she thought it was straight smoking.
Routed it to the intake like you can see in the picture, and failed emissions. Recently took it to the track, blew it up though...needed some small work to get running again and I've been driving it around without a problem, but theres a major compression issue :(
Need to clear out some room in the garage so I can go and get the engine I picked up for the car.
Once I can get that engine home and on an engine stand (which i still need to buy) I will do a compression test and make sure its good to run, replace the headgasket, and then order a set of either 262 or 268 cams.
Kracka 04-25-2010, 02:56 AM Someone decided to rip the temp. tag I had on the vehicle a week or so ago, so now I can't drive it legally. Thanks...
But I went to a VW show today in the Harrisburg PA area (Volksfest) got a sweet deal on a Techtonics Tuning chip for my car. It's setup for a car with intake/exhaust and Cams.
So that is currently one thing off my list of "To-Do's" for now, until I go forced induction ;)
The car still runs and drives fine, pulls hard for what it is, but I am trying to make some room to get my new-to-me engine to get ready to throw into the car to get me by until I have some more coin saved for the future plans. Also need to order the cams once I can get my hands on that thing.
I have to go to Harbor Freight and get myself an engine stand, and then have a friend weld up a mount so I can work on the Timing Chains and everything else I'd need access to, at once.
Keep checking this thread occasionally, as once I can get that engine into my garage (before my dad puts the Camaro in there....) I will be working on it every chance I get.
PortuguesePilot 04-25-2010, 03:26 AM awesome.
(message too too short my ***)
Dr.DooM 04-25-2010, 09:07 AM I wish i could have a project car like this at this stage, its just about perfect for what plans i would want to carry out.
Kracka 04-25-2010, 04:31 PM I didnt have paper/sharpie...so hopefully this counts as proof? (The SS in the background, and my Diesel)

6 speed, 18k miles.

I also like the car after seeing the engine that you had in it.
sry about your grandmother. at least she left you with a nice car. and that is pretty good milage for it.

We only really have the ability to do LSx PCM stuff...and you'd have to send your computer out to me/him in order for it to be done (Plus a couple of bucks for the HP Tuners credits)
Look up PCM4less.com, as they do mail order tunes...since thats honestly about all you can do with LT1s if I remember correctly.

Yeah that's one way of doing it. The other way is I connect my car to a laptop, scan my car with datamaster and send you the data and you tune it, send me the new file with email, I burn it in with tunercat, and see if it works. We do this like a couple of times and after a couple of tweaks it'll be perfect.
I got all the software. Basically all your friend's gotta do is look at my scanned data and punch in some values. There's someone who does it for $75. I'm just trying to fix my gas mileage so I dunno if I should throw that much at it for a couple of bucks here and there, you know?
Just ask him, if he's cool, wouldn't hurt if we give it a shot.
Kracka 05-03-2010, 03:29 AM I will ask him, I just don't think he has the software needed. Since HPTuners is a flash system, and the LT1 stuff as you said is EPROM crap.
Another program that might actually work, would be LT1Edit.
I'll just send him my software. I have every possible software there is (well except LT1edit) and the whole thing is like 10mb. lol.

golf mk4 05-05-2010, 12:53 AM yeah nice car.. i love golf especially the older years of construction .. if i can give u a tip try the 1.8T AGU.. with a little bit tuning this engine has round about 220hp (just a good chip/exhaust tuning) and i know a 4cylinder does not make such a nice sound as the DOHC VR6 but the VR6 just swallows benzine by doing nothing up to 4000rpm ..furthermore the engine is much to heavy.. it is about a quarter of the weight of your car.. this must be too much weight on the front axis
Kracka 05-05-2010, 01:49 AM yeah nice car.. i love golf especially the older years of construction .. if i can give u a tip try the 1.8T AGU.. with a little bit tuning this engine has round about 220hp (just a good chip/exhaust tuning) and i know a 4cylinder does not make such a nice sound as the DOHC VR6 but the VR6 just swallows benzine by doing nothing up to 4000rpm ..furthermore the engine is much to heavy.. it is about a quarter of the weight of your car.. this must be too much weight on the front axis
A lot of people have mentioned the weight issue, but a majority of those who claim the engine is way to heavy for the car..haven't driven one to be quite honest.
You can sort of feel the larger engines weight when pushing the car through a turn at a high speed, but the engine is roughly the weight of a battery heavier than the 8v engine that it replaced.
I was originally going to do a 1.8T swap into my 89 Helios GLI, but ended up getting a great deal on this car...the 'easiest' swap as far as the 1.8t route would be the AEB found in the earlier A4s and the ~1999 Passat's, as the wiring was for the most part plug and play right to the fuse box, you just needed to mod 4 connectors on that engine harness.
The VR6 on the otherhand, literally just plugs right into the fusebox, while utilizing the Corrado subframe, although my car currently has the MK3 GLX Jetta front subframe, brakes, and suspension. The 5 lug swap was also done, as you can see the car currently on 15" Avus' found on 2.0l and base model 1.8t MK4 Jetta/Golfs.
golf mk4 05-05-2010, 02:20 AM to be honest.. i have just driven the engine in a golf III .. but this is another weight relation so you are right i cant evaluate if this is suggestive.. and with the 1.8t you are probably right .. im not very well versed in golf I to III .. im in golf IV ;)

Haha, I've had a Bora/Jetta IV as well, so I am familiar with those cars, although mine was an automatic 2.0L AVH...if it were a 5 speed, I'd still have the car. Was a great beater to drive daily.
Kracka 06-20-2010, 07:12 PM Some progress as of tonight:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n263/3rdgenfan/jetta/noradsupport.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n263/3rdgenfan/jetta/norad.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n263/3rdgenfan/jetta/bumper.jpg
Radiator was shot, and the coilpack went bad so instead of just replacing the coilpack and hoping I can get the car to pass emissions, I am just going to change the engine out with another one that I know works fine.
Once I get everything back in the car, the majority of the wiring will be tucked into the frame rails as to try and clean up the engine bay a little bit. I may relocate the battery to the back of the car tucked into a battery box placed in the spare tire well, we'll see though.
The bumper was primered because of how screwed up the paint was. I am letting it dry over night and then going to give it another coat of primer.
DJMantis 06-20-2010, 07:20 PM That is one full engine bay.
Kracka 06-20-2010, 07:23 PM That is one full engine bay.
Yeahhh thats what happens when you fill an engine bay with a 6 cylinder that was meant for only inline 4's :P
I am just going to change the engine out
I ****ing envy you. Wish I could do that shit, just get up one day and be like "meh don't wanna **** with this anymore let's swap it out". I would if I had room for a project car. I'd have put an LS1 in my Camaro by now.
Is it gonna be another VR6?
3ni_2nr 06-20-2010, 11:16 PM Ur gramma rocked a Camaro? She is the awesome. (Sorry she's gone though)
I really love this car. Not a lot of FWD 6 cylinder engines my way. :(

It's what happens when you're bored. I mainly decided tonight I may as well swap the engine out while I have half the car taken apart (even though they were big pieces :P )
My friend just sold me a radiator tonight since the old one was shot, I am getting the motor off of him (120k on the engine, but it was from an automatic so its basically like having 35k on it) as well as his Smoked Euro Taillights.
Yeah another VR6, you can't get much more badass and fun than this except for maybe a 1.8t.
Ur gramma rocked a Camaro? She is the awesome. (Sorry she's gone though)

Yep, before the 02 she had a few mid-late 80s Z28s, and before that it was all Corvettes and such...it's been 7 years this December since she passed.

Woah. Well your love for cars is just hard-wired into your DNA, after seeing how she rocked it. Cool story bro.
If you get time, can you do a lil' vid for us?
Dr.DooM 06-21-2010, 04:18 PM Yeah another VR6, you can't get much more badass and fun than this except for maybe a 1.8t.
mmmm 20valve?
Kracka 06-22-2010, 06:12 PM Taking the intake mani off tonight, one bolt left that decided to strip itself, so I will have to get that off some how before I can continue.
once thats off, I will be pulling the valve cover to check all that out to see what it looks like under there.
if I remember, pics will follow.
Kracka 06-22-2010, 07:53 PM Intake manfiold and valve cover are both off. I'll snap some pics in the day light. Vise grips come in handy.
Sasuke024 06-22-2010, 09:11 PM this would rock if it was in U2!!!
Tails_16v 06-23-2010, 02:56 AM If you're respraying some bits, you could respray those rims. Those rims are awesome, just not if they are painted completely in matte black. They're best looking when they're polished or painted metallic dark gray.

Yeah I was going to strip them and do them in a lighter/brighter color. They are chipped in some areas so once I get the car back on the road I will take the time and get the wheels done up.
Just a few more important things to do before I get to the wheels haha.
Kracka 06-24-2010, 12:25 AM Heres how the car sits now, the engine wasn't exactly rebuilt as the previous owner had told me. Looks like the timing chains were the only thing done "within the last 20K miles" as they were brand new looking, almost.

The motor that is going in the car is going to be pulled from the car and delivered this weekend hopefully. :)
Kracka 06-25-2010, 02:05 AM Motor is ready to be pulled out, I undid the rest of the harness from the engine, and loosened up the three motor mounts.
All that's left is undoing the axles, and the exhaust manifold...probably just going to unbolt the downpipe from the cat though. Less likely to **** up.
Dr.DooM 06-30-2010, 02:50 PM nice progress, i seriously cannot wait till you get this thing running again, there really is nothing like the sound of a VR6. Its such a unique engine!
Kracka 02-13-2011, 07:58 PM Back from the dead.
Dropped it off today at my friends house to have the engine work done, as I've got absolutely no time anymore to work on it.

I had more pics from before, but they apparently never saved to my memory card correctly.
Linkin 02-13-2011, 08:46 PM Do work son!
Dr.DooM 02-14-2011, 10:37 AM i like the stance this car has, it just seems to sit nicely, not too low but the wheels are nicely in the arches.
Good to see more progress, keep us updated :D
Kracka 02-17-2011, 03:39 PM Its slightly lower in that picture due to it being strapped down pretty good, but its not much different as you can tell from the earlier pictures.
Kracka 03-06-2011, 02:35 PM Ordered some parts today...
Timing chain kit, and then a complete cylinder head gasket kit (Headgasket, and upper/lower intake manifold and exhaust manifold gaskets)

Kracka 04-10-2011, 09:41 AM Need to look into it some more, and get specs but I believe I am purchasing a turbo kit for it this up coming weekend. :)

Engine is back in, car is running again...such a great feeling to hear it after so long.
They need to tidy up a few things and then I will be ripping the streets. Sounds healthier than the last setup did...so that's a plus.
3ni_2nr 05-17-2011, 09:31 PM MMM Heart of a lion.
Tubaman 05-18-2011, 06:36 PM Awesome bro! A buddy of mine is selling his MK2, if your interested.

Car is back together as I posted a while ago, had clutch issues with it so I never drove it after I got it back last May.
Finished putting the clutch in it a few days ago, and in the meantime I have been repairing wiring that has been hacked over the 21 years the car has been around. At the same time I am repairing the wiring, I am also tucking them as best I can to try and clean up the engine bay.
The exterior plan was originally to be resprayed Cosmos Purple from a 2004 Pontiac GTO, but at this point I feel it would just be best to vinyl wrap the exterior in a Metallic Blue finish, and get a set of Schmitt Spaceline wheels...but thats not for a long time. For now I will finish what needs to be done and then continue to drive the car until the Warranty runs out in my Trailblazer.
Tubaman 04-30-2012, 08:36 PM Mk2 wiring is funnnn...good luck
Kracka 05-26-2012, 07:48 PM Got it registered first try....finally been putting miles on it here and there. This thing pulls like a monster and will destroy the tires in first.
Did some work on the mk2 after I got home from work tonight.
Washed it for the first time in two years, as well as completely vacuumed out the interior.
BEFORE: (2 years of sitting btw)

DodgeBoy 05-26-2012, 08:03 PM Cool. What's the story on that Mustang in the back?
EVO9MR 05-27-2012, 01:45 AM Looks really nice! I wanna do a swap like this at one point :D
And ditto, what's up with the Mustang?
Kracka 05-28-2012, 09:47 AM It's my friends 1970 Mustang Grande, been through numerous engine and trans combos when we were all 16-18 years old, he put it into storage when he bought a 2003 Cobra, and then ended up doing a single turbo setup on the cobra and realized with a 1000whp newer car, there is no need for the 70. He then sold the cobra and bought an 05 Viper so the car still sits, but instead of in a barn it sits in our driveway.
Tubaman 05-28-2012, 02:45 PM Awesome to see this thing being worked on! And that Mustang is cool as well
Kracka 09-15-2012, 06:23 PM 14.9@93.5mph. :)
Mikeman101 09-15-2012, 07:26 PM Nice, epic vehicle. Possibly one of the few vehicles I'd buy myself.
