View Full Version : 1991 BMW 318is......with a twist.

The other week I was at a car meet and overheard someone talking about a 318is for sale 3 hours south. I had heard about the car before but didn't know it was for sale now. I got a number and called the guy almost immediately. We exchanged some emails and phone calls, and needless to say Sunday I drove down to pick up my newest toy.

It's a 1991 318is in Brilliant Red. The bodykit is an original Hartge kit, pretty rare and desirable among the E30 crowd. Black leather sport interior.

Annnnd the interesting part: ;)

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3900/swa1.jpg

That's an S38B36 engine from a 1991 BMW M5. For those of you not immersed in the oldschool BMW world, this is the god-swap of engine swaps. Extremely expensive and uncommon. The entire front suspension/rack/brakes is from a BMW E36 M3, the rear end is from a BMW M Coupe. Adjustable 600/500 coilovers, Style 73 rims and Supersprint exhaust.

325hp/290lb/ft and only 2500lbs. It's fun!

Nah dude, it's fairly clean but it's from the east and it's starting to rust. If I were to keep it intact I would do a full paint job and a lot of bodywork, which just so happens to already be done on my silver E30. Plus I still prefer the silver color over the red.

The swap won't happen until fall/winter at the earliest. I will drive it this summer and iron out any little issues I find, as well as begin to re-engineer the second swap and change a few big things around to fit better in my other car. It'll be a big project and pretty expensive, but the final goal is a magazine feature.

Ah alright, that makes sense. Long as the swap isn't as expensive as the paint job and bodywork. What you gonna do with the engine in your silver E30?

I think the red paint job is pretty hot but it kinda makes the car look like an older classic. The silver one looks more modern.

V-belts are an older style of belt/pully system. They work just fine, the big disadvantage I know of is that they're a PITA to replace and adjust compared to a serpentine belt. Otherwise a properly tensioned and installed vbelt is probably stronger considering it has less failure points and is more difficult to jump.

Nah the kit won't be swapped, I'm not really a fan of bodykits on BMW's to be honest. I wouldn't install it myself, but considering the body has been modified for this kit it will have to stay with the car.

Silver car has a LOT (LOT) of time and love poured into it, as well as a lot of sentimental value. I don't plan on ever selling the silver car. Worst case scenario is I'll keep both and fix the red one up too. ;)

Sounds amazing! The sound is almost as legendary as a Porsche flat-6.

One thing though, how far do you think the added weight changes the car's handling/balance?

Dr.DooM
07-06-2010, 11:35 AM
A rough guess would say it will have added quite a bit of weight to the front end but juxtapose that to the fact that alll the suspension has been uprated and the new rear end is maybe a little bit heavier i'm confident it will remain reasonably balanced.
Only linkin can tell us what it is actually like though.

Linkin
07-06-2010, 01:26 PM
It's not much heavier to be honest, the engine itself is about 90lbs heavier but the spring rates are cranked way up so it's not really noticeable. The engine also sits further back over front axle so the balance itself is pretty nice. The biggest difference is in braking, that's where the weight really shows.

There's no emission testing here regardless of age. Rumors that might change in the future, but for now it's all fair game.

Right now I no longer have plans on doing the swap again. After getting to know the car and own it for several months I've decided to keep it strictly as a toy to be driven on weekends and really nice days to car meets and stuff. I've done some racing in it already (autox, drag and drift) and plan on doing a lot more now that I've gotten a feel for what the car can do. I want to build it up more road-racer style, once my budget is set up I'm looking at getting a rollbar, Bride seats, different shift knob setup and possibly a different wheel. Rear seats would be removed and front harnesses installed. The reason for the change of mind is I realized:

a) the car is very well built and it would be a shame to tear it apart, everything is professionally fit and crafted. The builder said it was his shop "masterpiece" and I can see that

b) it would not be a practical car for every day use. It's much too stiff, loud and bad on gas to daily drive rain or shine which is what I do with my silver E30

What I did last summer and what I'll do again this summer is just insure both E30's and drive whichever one I feel like driving in the morning. Not exactly a rough scenario to live with haha.

I started patching up some rust here and there, the goal is to just stop what is there from spreading any further and clean up any visible spots. It definitely doesn't have a lot of rust, just a bit, which is more than the other cars none. The fact that it'll never see snow again as long as I own it should help a lot.

site #2 not there? why?:\

Linkin
03-06-2011, 03:25 PM
Hi Anton, the M62 would be faster than the S52. It's also more expensive and requires more work to swap. All in all expect around $10k-$20k to do a big engine swap. The smaller ones are a little cheaper but still around $10k.

Anton_e30
03-07-2011, 04:46 PM
so i found a m62 engine up for $1,800 it has 80k and is grade A; also a transmission for $895 with 69,400 miles grade A; and an e30 325i for $1,200 good condition.
you're saying it would come out maybe $6,000-$10,000 g's?

1,200+895+1,800= $3,895+ labor (how much do you think that will be?)= ?

Anton_e30

1,200+895+1,800= $3,895+ labor (how much do you think that will be?)= ?

You need to take into consideration a lot more than just the price of a used engine. You'll want to replace parts on the engine before you swap it because you don't know the history of it and it's not a good idea to go to all the work of putting an engine in a car without rebuilding/refreshing it first. The M62 is not a cheap engine to rebuild (no BMW V8 is) so figure at least $1500 + the $1800 for that. That'll get you a good, solid M62 worth swapping.

Then you need to think about how the engine and transmission are going to work in the car. An M62 won't exactly bolt right up... you'll need a custom driveshaft ($500), an LSD ($300), ECU and custom wiring harness ($1000), custom radiator ($200) and several other things such as a brake booster conversion (another $300).

Remember the fact that you're putting a V8 with a considerable amount more power into the car. The stock little E30 brakes aren't going to cut it. A well matched BBK is roughly $1000. I won't count the price of the upgraded wheels to fit over the bigger brakes, but you'll need those too. Upgraded suspension to manage the added weight of the engine would start at $600.

Then comes the fun part of fitting the engine into the car. An m62 swap is not an easy fit by any means and takes a good deal of fabrication. You'll need to build custom engine mounts, space the subframe, fit custom coolant lines and fit the upgraded radiator, modify the firewall and transmission tunnel to fit the larger gearbox and build a custom shift linkage to line up the shifter, fabricate a completely custom exhaust with two tight fitting headers and add the sensors needed to run an OBD2 engine. Provided you can find a shop willing to do this work I'd put that figure around $5000 labor and another $2500 material.

All added up we have $15,595. And that doesn't include the initial price of the car.

Nice engine swaps rarely make it past the imagination stage, but with a deep wallet and enough patience anything is possible. Some people do cut a lot of corners and occasionally pull it off for a lot less than the above figure, but the result is always sloppy and often dangerous.

As for the 0-60 time I don't know, I'd imagine around 6 seconds but it's a high strung engine. M5s aren't known to be fast off the line.

Anton_e30

They're real Alpinas, going on another E30 though. They're only 4-lug. :\

Damn, and I was looking to buy an E30 to tool around with in my spare time. I'd have definitely snatched that up.

I met another E30 guy who was really interested in the car and was eager to buy it, so I told him what it was worth to me and long story short I watched the car drive off on Sunday. It was becoming really apparent lately that I didn't have room for 2 summer-only E30's, and seeing as I'm never selling my silver 325 it was just a matter of waiting for the right person to come along for this one.
