So apparently I lost my password on my 2fast4u account and couldnt retrieve it due to the old email being changed, so now I'm back with a different account. Anyways...a lot has been done on the ol' Tbird recently. Here we go...

After an unimaginable number of setbacks, I'm very pleased to present you all with 306 version 2:

Changes since version 1:

- Cast steel Eagle crank
- New lifters
- New pushrods
- Fully balanced rotating assembly
- Electric fan w/2 speed fan control computer
- Underdrive pulleys
- Mechanical oil pressure gauge and electrical water temp gauge

Other pics:

The most likely cause of version 1's failure; we finally found it. Can you say cam walk?

Not relying on the stock gauges any more. New mechanical oil pressure gauge and electrical water temp gauge.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/kingcars/Reviving%20Tbird/relays.jpg
Here's a 2 speed Dakota Digital fan controller that we installed with a pair of 80amp DPDT relays and a 50amp circuit breaker. No more reliability problems with the efan setup. Cost a pretty penny, but definitely worth it. The computer reads straight off the water temp gauge I got.

The Tbird was recently featured in a Tbird/Cougar calendar that a forum I go to makes every year. This was the pic used; my car is the November car.

Well now that the super pic-spam is outta the way, let me just say that the 306 runs incredible. The low end torque is sooooo much fun and if I go WOT in 1st, even from a slow roll, she'll roast the tires  . Hope to get it back on the dyno soon to see how she does. Stay tuned!

Pretty cool! Good to see you got all the problems fixed. :)

I have 2 questions (which may sound stupid):
- Why are the pistons shaped like that? It kinda looks like it has 4 valves per cylinder... but it obviously doesn't.
- And, why your engine bay has so much little holes? Especially around the strut towers.

They're just used for different applications. If my memory serves correctly, even the stock Mustang pistons had 4 valve reliefs as well.

Your guess is as good as mine. It's one of the notorious things with all the 80s fox body cars like the Mustang, Tbird, and Cougar. Looks like they had some guy with a 12 gauge shotgun at the end of the assembly line.

Well now that I have the other Thunderbird as a daily driver, over the coming months I can finally do some other things for this car that I wanted to wait to do, like the paint and body work. I also haven't driven her in a week so since it'll be nice out tomorrow, I plan to go for a cruise. If my friend comes with me, I plan to get some video clips of the 306 in action. Stay tuned :)

So while it was a nice weekend, I was working on the Turbo Coupe in the garage (timing belt replacement) and got to put some more mileage on the 306. Car is still running excellent, and even got into a little spout with a 2011 5.0 Mustang while driving around haha. She finally broke 1000 miles as well, which is great. I apologize for the lack of new info, pics, or videos...I've been really tied up lately and my buddy who normally helps me film stuff is back at school several hundred miles away. There is a little project that will be coming soon though; one that has been on the waiting list for a while :) .

Car show season has finally returned so it was time for the 306 to make its debut! :) Cruised up there with my dad's Chevelle and his friend's Plymouth Valiant Wagon (which got TONS of positive attention)

I was very pleased to see the Tbird getting positive reactions from the people who actually took a moment to see what was under the hood. Not even 30 seconds after I parked and popped the hood, a guy who was on the phone walks up and I hear him say "Yeah I'm lookin at a Tbird with a Mustang Cobra engine in it...thats awesome." Always puts a smile on my face to hear things like that. Here are some other pics from the show:

Thanks! The white Mustang is definitely a beauty; that body style is one of my personal favorites. And yeah, I don't think I've listened to the radio at all since installing the 306 back in November haha. It's a sin to hide that exhaust note. ;)

One of my favorite moments was when I let my best friend take it for a spin for the first time. I noticed he kept lookin around every minute or so and when I asked why, he said "I keep thinking that I hear an awesome car comin down the road, but then I realize it's us!" hahaha. Not bad for a pair of $30 mufflers.

Whoever had the transmission before me had it in a 65 Mustang so the shifter doesn't fit with a normal fox body Tbird or Mustang boot, as the previous boot found out the hard way. A couple of random boots from pull-a-part (local junkyard...i paid $4.27 for this stuff) and some silicone should do the trick for now...

Also got the AC charged today...it's ice cold :) . All I gotta do now is put the boot on tomorrow, then do an oil change and check tire pressures and she's good to go. Can't wait for Thursday! Expect plenty of pics :)

Just got back from Mustang Week. Had an awesome time. Didn't get any pics of the Tbird unfortunately, but my gf wants to do a proper photoshoot soon with some nice camera equipment we came across thanks to my dad. The good news is that the car didn't skip a beat during the 4 hour drive in 100 degree weather and stop-n-go traffic we encountered constantly during the vacation. I did get one pic though, with a friend's 03 Mustang GT:

It's at the end of July every year in North Myrtle Beach. I definitely recommend going, but book your hotel or condo several months in advance. Let me know if you plan on going next year.

And dat Boss 429... holy. shit. That new 5.0 engine in the old 5.0 is highly epic as well.

The Boss 429 was incredible. I'm sure the owner had to wipe gallons of drool off the car when all was said and done.

As for the 5.0 swap, I heard an interesting story about it. That was one of the first fox body Mustangs to ever receive the new 5.0 engine, and because of that, there are no aftermarket parts for it. They had to have a K member custom made for it (a 4.6L K member wouldn't fit because the new 5.0 has a flat oil pan) and they even fabricated their own power steering pump. Then they offered the car to some header companies, like Cook, to have headers made for it. Offered them the car so they can use it for research and development. They refused because "nobody would want to do such a swap." Well now that the car is done and everyone wants to do the swap, all the companies are now scrambling to release aftermarket parts to make such a swap more feasible to normal people.

Needless to say...once it becomes affordable and I have the money for it, I wouldn't mind stuffing one of those into my white car's engine bay.

Oh and - random sidenote - no sign of any Thunderbirds. Mine was the only one :) . There was also only one 2.3 Turbo Mustang SVO at the show. Maybe I'll drive my Turbo Coupe down there next year.

@kingcars66:

I always thought the ultimate 2-door sleeper would be a Lexus SC300 with a Supra engine. Your T-Bird made me reconsider it.
It's just too impressive.

It is definitely a fun sleeper and gets great reactions from people when they hear it. I actually had the pleasure of hearing the car from the outside the other day as my friend drove it in a parking lot...I had a grin from ear to ear hahaha.

That's a sweet T-Bird man! Love the tail light mod, reminds me of the old 60's and 70's Cougars.

As a Camaro guy I consider all Mustangs to be fagmobiles unless I'm looking at a Boss or something. Your car is something else though...I love that thing. When I saw it on the front page I was like..."yeah..that shit makes the whole website look badass" haha

Haha thanks :D . I definitely like that it's not a cookie-cutter Mustang...I always call it the Tbird that thinks it's a Mustang. I love all kinds of cars...Fords, Chevys, BMWs, Nissans, you name it. But when I'm at a car show or out somewhere, it's always the cars that aren't very common that catch my eye.

Random sidenote - Actually found an 88 Tbird at a car show the other day that was all original (155hp 5.0 with the auto :( ) and had 8,800 miles on it...it was PRISTINE. Looked like it just came off the showroom floor. Unfortunately the pictures didn't come out :(

Agreed. A couple of weeks ago I went to *the* big local cruise in and got a parking spot right on the street. Saw a few people intrigued by the Tbird, but didn't get NEARLY the amount of attention as when I started her up to leave. I wish you guys could have seen all the heads turn like "No way that Tbird sounds like that" LOL...even with the hood open, it's a sleeper. Glad to see my plan so far has worked.

Also did a recent photoshoot with the car and a good quality camera...gotta finish the roll of film first though, but I'll post them when they're done.

Did a little impromptu "photoshoot" last month with an old school 35mm film camera. The pics came out pretty awesome, and I like the old school look that the film gives.

Pretty cool, even if the camera is possibly older than the car.

It's been a while, but there is a new project on the horizon....a few hints:

Have a nice package of parts heading here now...still have some stuff to get though.

The first parts have arrived!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/kingcars/Suspension%20Project/firstparts.jpg

Suspension Tech front springs (discontinued several years ago), MAC caster/camber plates, offset steering rack bushings, and rear shock adapter brackets that will allow me to use Mustang shocks in the rear. Everything is brand new, never used...and the best part is that I got it all for $100. Couldn't ask for a better start!

Cool stuff. Now the sleeper gains another dimension. How do you think it will handle now?

kingcars66

From what I understand, the Suspension Tech front springs are as good as it gets for these Tbirds. Many people were not happy when they were discontinued several years ago, but I would imagine that there just wasn't enough demand for them. The shocks I plan to get are widely used in good streetable setups on Mustangs. Down the road I want to get some subframe connections and bigger swaybars; then she should handle like a dream. I would love to go to the nearest road course (Virginia International Raceway, aka VIR) for a track day sometime and see how it goes.

Not much news on this front, except that I have once again decided to crash the party at Mustang Week :)

Dat Cobra... and those Fox Bodies... you gotta love 'em! Still, out of those, the most interesting one is the T-Bird ;)

Big thanks to TruePro for recovering this thread for me. If any admins have an issue with the thread, feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to work it out.

Anyways, I totally forgot to share a new acceleration vid with you guys that I took a couple of weeks ago :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/kingcars/Engine%20Project/th_306Run.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v173/kingcars/Engine%20Project/?action=view&current=306Run.mp4)

It was from about a 5mph roll and I let off around 70mph. In other news, I was able to get the Tbird into the cruise in here at Mustang Week. She got quite a bit of positive attention from the moment I rolled in, which was nice.

The pic was taken early before the place completely filled up with cars. I have some more pics on my phone and camera that I'll be uploading in the next couple of days. :)
