Optimizing display performance
===============================================

TEST DRIVE Properties Dialog Box
----------------------------------

When starting a TEST DRIVE game a windows dialog box will first come up. Each tab has options that can help the performance of the game. Also these tabs can help if you have a specific graphic issue (see troubleshooting for more details).

Game Options (default tab)
----------------------------

“ADVANCED OPTIONS?

For trouble shooting or to improve the game performance, click on the “ADVANCED? option. Under this option there are several options to turn off certain video functions. TEST DRIVE should automatically detect what type of hardware you have and set these options to the correct default for your hardware. However there are several things that you can select on this page that can help performance.

“Disable Reflections?: If you are having slow frame rate performance in the game select this option. This will turn off the real time reflections in the game which will increase the game performance significantly. This is highly recommended for machines close to the minimum spec.

“Texture Quality / Performance?: If you are experiencing pausing in game play or slow performance, select the “performance? option under this setting. TEST DRIVE will then use smaller size textures which should improve the amount of texture swapping done on the fly in the game and by doing so should improve the performance. This option is highly recommended for machines with below 256Mbytes of ram.

“Disable Animation?: This will turn off the in car driver animation. It will also remove pedestrians from the game. Select this option to increase the game performance.

Selecting Default on the Game options will change all settings back to the initial settings.

Video Mode
------------

“Resolution?

The resolution in which you run the game will have the greatest impact on performance if you are not in the lucky position of running the latest top of the line graphics cards. Running at 640x480 in 16 bit mode or even 512x384 in 16 bit mode should provide decent performance even on older hardware. TEST DRIVE will automatically detect what video resolutions are possible with the detected hardware. Just because a higher resolution is available does not mean the game will run well at that resolution. Most machines above the minimum spec will run comfortably at 800x800x32.

Other things that can affect performance:

Memory
--------

TEST DRIVE’s performance is highly dependent on the amount
of RAM you have in your machine, and the amount of memory that is
available. Machines with less memory will access their hard disk more
frequently to load data, which causes sporadic pauses in gameplay. Thus, if you have a 256 MByte (or less) machine, you should make sure that you don't have other unnecessary programs loaded in memory when playing TEST DRIVE.

How the game will perform under different RAM conditions:

* 128 MByte: lots of swapping

* 256 MByte: minimal swapping with default settings

* 256 - 512 Mbytes: might swap in rare cases with highest texture detail

* 512 MByte or more: shouldn't swap

View Distance
---------------

In game you can always change the view distance to improve performance. Go to options/game settings and then lower the view distance. The smaller the number the less the game has to draw.

General Tips to increase performance
------------------------------------

If you’re having game performance issues try the following things in this order:

** Change the resolution to a lower setting. If you’re already running 640x480 you really shouldn’t need to go any lower so try one of the other remaining options.

** Turn off reflections. This will give you a good performance boost. However if you’re running higher than a Geforce2 type card you shouldn’t need to do this.

** Change the texture setting to “performance?. This should increase frame rate and reduce game pausing.

** Turn off animations.

** Reduce draw distance.

Troubleshooting
===============================================

Error Messages
----------------

You start the game and either of the following messages appears:

** “Could not initialize Direct3D You may want to check that DirectX(version 8.1 or later) is correctly installed on your system?

- You’re version of Direct X is not up to date. You need to make sure that DirectX 8.1 is installed (it is provided on the test drive disc in the direct x folder).

** “Could not find any compatible Direct3D devices. Either there is no DirectX 8.1 compatible 3D Video Card in the system or the Video Card driver software is not up to date.?

- The driver for your video card is not compatible with DirectX 8.1 (not certified). You need to get an updated video card driver from your video card manufacturer. Please note older video cards may not be compatible with DirectX 8.1.

Obtaining DirectX 8.1b
------------------------

DirectX 8.1b contains bug fixes in the DirectX runtime that are required for the game to run on cards without hardware transform & lighting. E.g. Any version of Direct X 8.1 will run with Test Drive.

TNT2, Kyro I/II, Voodoo 3, Radeon 7000, ... DirectX 8.1b is included on
the CD and is automatically installed during the installation process if you have windows 98, ME or 2000.

DirectX 8.1b is not automatically installed if you have windows XP because you have to have the additional service pack installed. Test Drive will run with any 8.1 version of windows (8.1 is supplied automatically with XP) but we recommend upgrading to 8.1b. To check what version of direct X you have installed. Click on the "START" menu select "RUN" and type "DXDIAG". This will tell you what version of Direct X you have installed ("Direct X Version").

Versions of Direct X 8.1:

version: 4.08.01.0810 (DirectX 8.1 supplied with XP)
version: 4.08.01.0881 (DirectX 8.1a)
version: 4.08.01.0901 (DirectX 8.1b)

As previously mentioned any of these versions will run Test Drive, which just recommend 8.1b for best performance.

Alternatively you can read below how to obtain is separately.

If you are running Windows 98/ME/2000 you can download DirectX 8.1b
using the below link.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx81.asp

For Windows XP you have to install QFE 321178 to upgrade your version
of DirectX to 8.1b

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321178

Please note that Windows XP Service Pack 1 contains this fix.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

Other problems
----------------

** No music plays.

- Test Drive requires Windows media player in order to play music. The original version of Windows 98 does not come with Windows media player. You can download the windows media player from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.asp

** Rainbow type effect, instead of a normal reflection on the car in game play.

- Either disable reflections in the advanced options. Or if you are using a video card with an Nvidia chipset, try updating your driver.

- Pedals don’t work for accelerate or brake when using a Logitech steering wheel.

** This is a know bug. With certain combinations of operating system and Logitech drivers, Test Drive will not recognize the pedals. This will be addressed in the patch which should be available now (go to www.tdgame.com). The default configuration should set the accelerator and brake to the triggers in this situation.

- Brake pedal doesn’t work with Microsoft sidewinder steering wheel.

** Make sure that you have the Microsoft Sidewinder game controller software installed and do the following (taken from the Microsoft website):

SYMPTOMS
When you use the Microsoft SideWinder Precision Racing Wheel, the pedals may have no effect in the game, the brake pedal may not respond, or your vehicle may move in reverse when you press either pedal.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the game is not compatible with the "Combined" Pedal Mode of the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, change the Pedal Mode of the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller Software from Combined to Separate:
1.*Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.*Double-click Game Controllers.
3. Click Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel, and then click Properties.
4.*Click the Settings tab.
5.*Under Pedal Mode, click Separate.
6.*Click OK.
7.*If you are prompted to name the scheme, do so, and then save the scheme.
8.*Click OK.
9.*Close Control Panel.
