Default McLaren MP4-12C

Is McLaren really back into the street car business? Well apparently they are with this brand new MP4-12C for 2011. Although it doesn't look as great as the F1 (IMO) it is still a nice car besides the rear end. What do you guys think of it?

From NetCarShow:

Oh God. I'd hit it so hard the wheels would fall off.

It was about time for a new, personal favourite sports car.

i dunno man, as much as i would like to agree with you (and i sort of agree), to me, the rest of the car makes it for it. Besides, hearing the words "Mclaren" and "new sportscar" on the same sentence make it feels like Christmas morning.

You know, it's like on the sea of shitstorm that is the auto industry now, having one of my favorite car maker put out a new car is something good to feel...

A tad generic looking, but still pretty sexy non the less. I just want to see some full road tests on the car to see how it performs against the likes of the F458, LP560, SRT-10, GT-R, and ZR1...

Front looks like Carrera GT and F430, side from KZ1 and rear [if you take out the brakelights and exhaust] resembles R8 line. Not bad looking to be honest.
My mother called me yesterday and said that there was a new yellow McLaren Mercedes unveiled. Wondering which one could that be...

EDIT: went on supercars.net to read about this car and they say it's got 600HP and 7-speed transmission. From the looks of things its mass can be about 1300-1400kg.

Going to get old fast though, they're planning on releasing 1 model every 10 months for the next 5 years or so (so 6 or 7 models total), including the desirable "P12".

Not the most original design, but then again the current lead designer came in too late to have any real input other than modifying the light cluster slightly to look a little like the McLaren logo.

Fingers crossed, the next design will look less like a cross between an Evora and a Gallardo.

Surely, hearing the words "Mclaren" and "new sportscar" on the same sentence makes any car enthusiast feel like Christmas morning. But I'm a little disappointed because its not the beast the old one was.

I like how venom put it, it does look generic, very generic in fact. But for a generic 120-170K car, it looks ok. I was gonna say its ugly but it seems like the pictures posted aren't doing it justice.

It was 'bout time they make something, if you ask me. Even though I don't entirely like its design, it looks promising.

Mmmmh...No Merc engine? Are mabye the germans trying to get rid of McLaren?

However, this car looks orgasmic. But it doesn't look as good as the nicest McLaren's Future Automotive Decision entries, such as the Vortex, the Can Am or the M11B. Hope they'll keep those beauties for a outrageous supercar like the F1.

Doesn't look different in overallness from other cars in this group. To me it's an unbadged Farboud type.

Rather have the SLS.

I agree with most of the posters. This looks far better than Ferrari's new 458 Italia. It's more fluid, and has more sublte touches to it. Can't wait to see how it stacks up against that car, plus other competitors like the Lamborghini Gallardo and the upcoming Lotus Esprit.

My only complaint - the rear end looks very close to that on the just-launched Lotus Evora, but with different taillights. I think it's probably because those are the only two cars I know of that use that style of rear wing, where it is basically an opening in half of what would've been a solid rear spoiler.

You're an idiot. The 458 is a great looking car. Write a letter to Ferrari and make them apologize to you for making a car's exterior too complex for your tiny intellect to comprehend. Also, get some ****ing taste.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I'm really happy to see McLaren has made a new car, although, as Venom said it, the car looks a bit generic; kind of a mix between a Lamborghini and a Lotus if you ask me.
I wonder how would it be if the designers of this McLaren were Gordon Murray and Peter Stevens again.

Here's some details about the engine for those interested.

Quote:
Powertrain: pure McLaren

The McLaren MP4-12C is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8 litre 90° V8 engine - the 'M838T'. This marks the start of a new era in 'core' segment sports cars - smaller capacity, lighter weight, higher efficiency and more economical power units. The engine has the highest specific power output in its segment which, when allied to its low weight carbon composite chassis, delivers exemplary power- and torque-to-weight ratios.

'M838T' is a unique McLaren power unit, developed specifically for the 12C. It is compact, lightweight, very stiff, and offers an uncompromising combination of very high performance and good driveability, with excellent economy and CO2 emission values.

Taking power and emissions in combination (measured by its horsepower to CO2 ratio), the 12C delivers its power at greater efficiency than any other car on the market with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.

'M838T' features dual variable valve timing and produces around 600bhp and 600Nm of torque. A dry sump and flat plane crankshaft allow the engine to be placed extremely low in the chassis thereby lowering the centre of gravity and improving handling responses. It also features composite cam covers and intake manifolds, which reduce weight and heat transmission into the charge air, as well as Nikasil-coated aluminium liners for further weight reduction.

The McLaren engine revs to 8,500rpm, has quick transient throttle response and delivers its abundant torque throughout the rev range. A staggering 80 per cent of torque is available at below 2,000rpm, ensuring great driveability and no need to floor the throttle to deliver performance.

[...]

The high level exhaust pipes exit through a mixing box, rather than a conventional and heavy silencer box. All parts of the exhaust system up to the mixing box feature sandwich layer heat-shielding that helps reduce heat from the engine bay. In just an 18mm gap, exhaust gas temperatures reduce from 900°C to 300°C.
Hmm, it's not a naturally aspirated BMW V12, which kind of dissapoints me... however, the stats and efficiency of this engine are just amazing. I can't wait to see it in action.

"Any normal person would say that" is not an opinion; it's a generalization.

Think about it though, you got an exotic sports car, like a Lamborghini Diablo, and you buy it in black. WTF is the point of that? "I have a gorgeous sports car and I'm going to paint it in some generic colour." To me, that's fail. Same goes with white. White looks stupid on any car, whether it's an exotic or a DD. It's like getting training wheels for a Ducati; all black does is 'tame' the 'beast'.

English cannot express how rediculous this statement sounds to me, especially right after you frown apon generalizations. Black is 'generic'? Who the hell cares? If a car looks best in black, I'm going to buy it in black. If you ask me, black can look pretty leet and stealthy and, when polished correctly, gleams incredibly in the sun, whereas red says "Look at me, I own a sports car, see what a poser I am?" whether you want it to or not. It's preposterous to make such a blanket statement about an entire color.

As for the MP4, it's...not incredible. Not ugly, but kind of lacking feeling, much like the F1.

Maybe English COULD explain, perhaps if you knew some. I will sum up this entire paragraph in one sentence: "You are a doody head and I like black. UR RONG! RED IS FOR POSERS!"

I'm positive the designers at Pininfarina would love to hear your ridiculous generalization on the colour 'Red' and how you think it's for posers.

Red allows the viewer(s) to gaze and visualize the details on all the curves and angles that are present in exotic sports cars; black, on the other hand, hides them. There's a reason why Ferraris come in red. I never said I disliked black on ALL cars; muscle cars and sleepers look fantastic in black.

Had seen this car a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine had shots of It before It hit the Internet, as he has connections. The car looks great, although a bit generic, I must admit. The performance is quite impressive.

jee, I expected something alil cooler.
Compared to the popular F1, this thing is, just like Venom said, very generic looking.

The only reason why this thing will be so popular is the name... I for one, wont jump on this band-wagon.

This McLaren draws styling from the F1 but it could be said it doesn't look very unique...

Nevertheless, I love seeing McLaren doing sportscars again. At least they aren't as stuck up as Williams. I used to like Williams back in the Renault and BMW days but they could never abandon their narrow-minded approach to business and stayed confined to F1. As of 2009, it hasn't done them any good. On the other hand, political woes aside, McLaren had at least three very successful seasons in recent years, with one drivers championship claimed by Hamilton.

It does look a lot better than the 458 Italia, too! The F430 is a young model and shouldn't have been discontinued so soon.

Lol wtf, I agree with venom that its a bit generic looking except the rear. And what do we have here?! Guys who cant think of something else then calling it the worst blah and crap. I mean what the ****, I guess every car would look the same even in like 20 years if everyone would think like that. What makes the rear of the F1 look better then this one?! I knowing everyone has his own taste but you could atleast say sth else then some of the things above

I like the idea of a new Mclaren. It wont be my favorite car because I dont just care for the name or performance. But its looking really nice and Im sure its fast like hell as well

Oh. I was hoping for something a little more...aggressive. Its a bit underwhelming to look at. For any other car company, it would look beast. But for McLaren...
/\
My opinion. Just saying how I feel about it.
Performance wise, however, this should be good.

Well, if you guys think about it, the original McLaren F1 wasn't exactly the most flashy supercar around. IMO it stands out far less than say, a Ferrari F50 or Lamborghini Diablo. This new McLaren also seems to follow a similar, though somewhat generic path.

Still, Bajnup (lot harder to type than punjab - strange), I think metallic black or silver or white could be great colors for an exotic. The color isn't that big of a deal, as long as its an expensive one. Besides, white is great for hiding dings and dents and scratches.

I disagree with anyone who says McLaren F1 was generic/bland looking in its time. When I saw it in NFSII the first thing that it resembled to me was a dinasour, with the lines on the back of its neck. Big exhaust, the lines on the rear bumper, vents on the side with the lines that made it more than obvious, fat tires buldging outta the wheelarches, almost like a dragster, roof scoop, hood scoop, gold engine, and the way those doors would open. It was anything BUT ordinary. It was classy, yet very, very, very exotic and aggressive looking. It still is. You could still make a car like that and everyone would say it's super aggressive looking.

This car looks ok. Not bad, but not memorable. The only thing McLaren about it is its function. A showcase of perfect engineering. Nothing more to it.

As a British sports car, it should only be purchased in one colour:

British Racing Green

(But then again, red ones go faster )
