Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SLB) mainly knwon as "SL Benfica" or simply "Benfica".

although it's going through a bad period (nearly ten years without winning anything), it's still the biggest portuguese club with over 6 million fans internally and over 8 million externaly (est.)

SL Benfica was one of the european giants in the gone decade of 60. it won the prestigious UEFA European Champions League in 1960/61, putting a stop to the almighty Real Madrid 5-2. the spanish team was, until then, the only team to be crowned European Champion, since it won all previous editions of the UEFA European Champions League (5).

next year (season of 61/62), Benfica was, again, European Champion, defeating FC Barcelona for 3-2 on yet another iberic challenge. Eusébio, the best portuguese player ever and one of the 5 best football players of all time was the star of that game.

since then, Benfica has been present in another 7 European Champions League finals (the last one being in 1990), wich makes us the second team with more presences in european finals, right behind the historical Real Madrid (wich is, curiously, trained by a portuguese coach and has in its squad the best portuguese player of today: Luis Figo).

we've also been vice-winners of the UEFA Cup in the season of 82/83, one Taça Iberica, one Latin Cup and countless other lesser trophies (like Teressa Herrera, among others...)

we have 30 portuguese league wins (more than FC Porto, Sporting CP, CF Belenenses and Boavista FC put together), 23 portuguese Cups and 3 National Supercups.

Newcastle United is managed by Bobby Robson. he was portuguese champion three times and won the portuguese cup with FC Porto. he also coached Sporting CP. Newcastle United also has in it's squad a portuguese player: Hugo Viana.

FC Porto is currently the best portuguese team and one of the best teams of Europe (they won the UEFA Cup last year) wich also makes it, consequently, one of the best teams of the World. it causes grief in my heart to say it ('cos FC Porto is a deadly rival of SL Benfica) but it's true.

Edgaras Jankauskas is usually a sustitute player in FC Porto, but he played for SL Benfica two years ago.

are Porto in UEFA cup or champions league this season, maybe Porto Newcastle final hehe, in the UEFA cup, we crashed out in the first round, , but thrashed NAC (or maybe NEC ?) 5-0, 0-1, 6-0 on aggregate :super: .

by saying vice winners do you mean they came second

I hate Figo, scored against England in Euro 2000

Default Well?

yeah, england did class (sarcastic) in euro 2000. we have got much stronger since, apart from against Lichtenstein etc, still won though.

Germany have gone downhill since Bierhoff, Klinsmann, Mathaus etc went to the old folks home.

I can't believe I see people here routing for FC Porto
It's my major hate target!!! j/k but don't like it a bit thou..
I am a SL Benfica Fanatic Portugal too of course but I don't like Figo that much too but that's a personal issue lol
I prefer many many times more Rui Costa of AC Milan, best known as the Maestro among the portuguese people.
My international team is AC Milan but not because of Rui Costa cause I already liked it a lot before Rui Costa went there.
Also like Man. United.

i also like Rui Costa more than i like Figo, but it's for emotional reasons. after all, Rui Costa came from Benfica and never betrayed his club, quite by the contrary. but he's falling quite badly lately... age seems to have finally got to him. Luis Figo is a very talented, regular and complete player, but he is quite boring and too "pop" on an image way... and he came from Sporting CP... YUCK!

i have no other team than my beloved Benfica. i do not rout for any other club in the world. my international team is Benfica and in what football is concerned, the only other team that i rout for is the Portuguese National Squad.

AC Milan? they ruled Benfica out of the European Champions League final in 1963 and in 1990 so i can't like them.

Manchester United? hum... they have Cristiano Ronaldo there and he also came from Sporting CP... YUCK! they also ruled Benfica out of an European Champions League final in 1968, so they suck too.

When I lived in Europe soccer was my favorite sport, now I live in Canada, and it's still my favorite sport, and I do know the rules to the american sports, it's just that I really don't like them. "soccer" is better then any american sport in my opinion. BTW I love Manchester United, and Real Madrid isn't too bad, but Manchester is the favorite.

Well I have to agree with this, why do they call that "football" in the USA? the players hardly touch the ball with the feet, that's plain ignorance!

My all-times favorite teams are: Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Valencia respectively, I also feel some sympathy for Chelsea, Arsenal, Juventus and Ajax and Bordeaux. I REALLY hate Real Madrid and Man. United (mainly real madrid).

About the crazy fans, well, you just have to see the fans of argentinan football, the Hoolingans seems like sheep in front of these maniacs!

Sorry there but I can't agree you with that Rui Costa is falling badly lately cause don't forget that Milan won the champions league and he was the top "feeder",the one that made more passes to goal in the league and don't forget that there was a Zidane, Beckham,Giggs and Figo playing in the league too and we all know that this ones are great passers too
And 2 weeks ago he made an astonishing game again by Milan, he maybe slower but he sure is more talented with the ball in his feet.
I just don't like Figo cause we had a little "misunderstanding" in the now closed disco Alcantra-Mar,I'm sure you know it

And I love Milan cause like Benfica they are a team that has a great past and even if they are in a very bad chape (like SL Benfica now ) they are always feared (Infenro da Luz  )

P.S. - Can anyone name a player that refused to celebrate and even cried when he scored a goal against his first team?I can, Rui Costa

don't get me wrong, Rui Costa is still a great player and capable of great deeds, but not as he once did. he no longer has the "undesputable" title in AC Milan (brazilian Kaka is threatning his status) and i still have his appaling exebition for the Portuguese team against Albania very much present in my memory. what i saw in that game was a shadow of the old Rui Costa. Figo is younger and the spanish football is not as demanding as italian football, so he still plays OK, but Rui Costa is not going to last very long. in fact, i think he will be back in Benfica next seson.

anyway... no, i don't know what happened in Alcantara-Mar. what was it?

Lol off course you don't know what happened there I was only asking if you know Alcantra-Mar
What happen was that I went there with a friend a long time ago and when we were going in he was leaving with a girl (before he was married to that godness  ) and my friend that until that day was a great fan of him just look at him happily supriesed and said :"Look it's Figo!!!" then that stupid f*ck looked at him with a superior look and awsered:"Yeah that's right.. do you have a problem with that?"
Of course that in that moment I just went mad! 1st he once played in Sporting so I already didn't like him too much and 2nd realizing that how he reacts to people that idolatrates him just made me blind But I didn't even had time to touch his pretty face, the gorilas dressed in suit just grabed me and throw me and my friend out of the club just right after entering it because nobody-can-touch-the-that-time-Barcelona-player @sshole

And about Rui,I don't get you wrong, just diferent points of view

ignorance? no! the name of one paticular sport does not represent the intelligence level of an entire nation! [then again we do have George Douba-Ya at the wheel so I guess that doesnt say much]

The sport was probably named by one person, a long time ago, who chances are, was DRUNK at the time!

PortuguesePilot & AutoSueco.Pt>>> the best pass guy in the world is Pablo Aimar, that's almost 95,2% correct. Aimar->Mista combo is unstoppable for anyone facing head-to-head to Valencia. Need facts? 2-0 win over Real "Los Galacticos" Madrid  Mista scored 1st goal i think  And Valencia leads the legue this year  That means they are the best team of Spain  Also they won 2001-2002 season by kicking Real Madrid's lead and made 6th to 1st in 8 matches i think (point difference was about 10-15 if i remember right)

Lol soory for not sharing the same opinion as you but the best passer in the world you gotta admit it's Beckham.I know hes too pop and is not as quite good dribling but when it comes to shot or pass that man just puts the ball where he wants  Ever seen it on the free shots with a six man barrier and a keeper with 100% atention he just puts the ball inside!! and his centers are the best the freacking ball always finds the striker head no matter what.If you see only one game of him it's enough for you to agree with me and I hate R.Madrid as well, especially Zidane (sorry NFS Tuner )

Going on-topic:I love SL Benfica :dopey:

I feel so alienated...I know nothing about European soccer. :super:

The comment on the American team I only knew because it was on the news once.

AutoSueco.Pt... maybe Beckham puts the ball where he wants in the passes, but... the best free-shoy kicker in the world is Sinisa Mihajlovic! don't discuss about that, I know Beckham kicks some very good free-shots too, but not as good and elegant as Mihajlovic.

I parcially agree with that, cause he shoots too good as well and I know that cause SLBenfica is not going to Champions League thanks to one of his freekicks but Beckham.. every game he plays if he dosen't have a goal he has a pass to goal and that is just a fact I once liked Beckham but not much anymore but gotta admit it.. he's evil shooting

Going on-topic:I still love SL Benfica. :dopey:
